"The Valley of Death. This was my first time visiting Death Valley National Park and it felt like I was on another planet. It is a vast arid landscape with pockets of amazingness that one cannot see anywhere else. The sky also burned every day and then cleared up for the stars at night." #MyCanonStory

#BehindTheShot with #CanonExplorerOfLight @lindsayadler_photo: "Inspiration can come from anywhere; a song, a painter, a dream, a movie, and endless other sources. In this case, I drew my inspiration from the movie 'Gone with the Wind'. I was watching a behind the scenes exploration of the piece, and discovered that one of the final, epic and fiery sunset scenes was actually created all indoors on a soundstage!
I decided I wanted to experiment with this technique. How could I create rich orange tones and sunset in my studio with no compositing? It took a bit of trial and error, but here is what I came up with!
First, I printed out a large canvas print of a sunset on a Canon Pro 4000 to create my sky background. This allowed me to select the exact sky I wanted without having to do it in Photoshop, and allowed me to better visualize the light in my ‘scene’. Next, I used a soft light source (an umbrella with diffusion) with a warm gel (CTO) to the left of the frame to emulate sunset light. Another light was placed overhead to light the background and the subject’s hair. Finally, another light was used in the front of the subject (next to the camera) to control the detail in the shadows.
Finally, I had my hair stylist use a piece of cardboard to flap up and down to blow the subject’s hair dramatically to help give a sense that the subject was outdoors.
Want to see the full photo deconstruction with behind the scenes images and before/after post-processing? Check out the video on my youtube channel: https://Canon.us/lindsay By utilizing 3 studio strobes, a printed canvas background of a sunset, and purposeful color grading, I was able to create this striking beauty photograph reminiscent of that 'Gone with the Wind' technique!"
