Greetings! This is Carson Evans, Digital Media Fellow at the RISD Museum, with my last image for the week. Behold, a wild specimen from Costume & Textiles. What could drive this sealskin topper over the top? A sealskin butterfly, of course. Look forward to similarly intriguing objects in an upcoming show by C&T; curator Laurie Brewer! #risd #risdmuseum #hats #costumeandtextiles #butterfly

Happy Saturday, and a very happy graduation day to the students of the Rhode Island School of Design!
This is Emily Banas, assistant curator of decorative arts and design (@decartscurator)
————————————————————————
Every year, a staff member from the RISD Museum escorts the ceremonial mace and chain of office to graduation. The chain of office, made by former RISD faculty member Merlin Szasz is worn by President Rosanne Somerson, and the mace, produced by Louis Mueller, is carried by the Grand Marshall, Peter Tagiuri, professor of architecture. ————————————————————————
The RISD chain of office bears the Latin inscription, VITA BREVIS EST ARS LONGA: life is short, art is long. ————————————————————————

The RISD Museum joins museums nationwide in participating in the tenth summer of Blue Star Museums, a program which provides free admission to our nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families this summer. In fact, the RISD Museum proudly extends these benefits to our country’s service members and families year round. #bluestarmuseums #risdmuseum #risd

Hello, this is Jac Parker (@haveyourartandeatittoo), Associate Registrar for Collections Management, with my last behind the scenes post this week.
Today is a #flashbackfriday post. As many of you have heard, we recently opened our Gorham Silver exhibition. What you may not know is that after the show closes at RISD it will travel on to 2 other venues. To prepare the objects to travel the Registrars, with the help of conservators and curators, spent 4-5 months before the show opened photographing and documenting the condition of every object that is a part of the exhibition (over 600 pieces!). These condition reports will travel with the show so that we can continue to monitor the condition of the objects at each venue!
Gorham Silver: Designing Brilliance 1850-1970 will be on view at the RISD Museum through December 1, 2019.

Did you know that every object in the RISD Museum Collection has its own unique accession number? Numbers are assigned based on the year acquired, the order it arrived, and how many objects were a part of that specific gift or purchase. Once assigned, numbers are applied directly to the objects for inventory control. There have been a variety of methods used over the years to apply numbers, like in some of the images above, ranging from red paint to typed fabric stickers. Today's methods are a bit more conservation based; like using a clear coat to adhere a small archival tag, which I'm currently doing for our Roman Bronze "Lion Foot" (2018.73), which was aquired last Fall.
Curious what objects those other numbers belong to? Use the link in our bio to go to the RISD Museum website, follow the links for Art & Design / The Collection, and enter the accession numbers to do your own object search!
