It was her sixth solo album and second for Asylum Records, the WMG label founded by David Geffen – about whom Mitchell wrote the song “Free Man in Paris.” Critically acclaimed, it became Joni’s most commercially successful album – hitting No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 1 in Canada, certified RIAA double platinum, and featuring her only Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit, “Help Me.”
#tbt 50 years ago today, Led Zeppelin were in the midst of a four-night run at San Francisco’s Fillmore West as part of their first North American tour. The shows came on the eve of the January 12th release of their self-titled Atlantic debut album. At the time, it was largely dismissed by rock critics, who would soon change their tune, acknowledging both the album and the band for their groundbreaking, unprecedented sound and influence. Shown is an item from the “Atlantic/Atco/Cotillion Bulletin” of January 6, 1969, along with an original ad for the album.
