Our new favourite way to move firewood! It’s six months later, and we’re still dealing with the aftermath of the winter wind storms = lots of chainsawing. On the plus side, our firewood pile for next winter is looking preeeetty impressive.
There are many countries that offer scenic train rides but a few match with the breathtakingly beautiful landscapes of New Zealand. The TranzAlpine is a train journey to not miss but the Northern Explorer was the best we could manage on as short a holiday as ours. No regrets, only unforgettable memories.
We started our Kiwi Rail sojourn from Papakura train station right down to the south western end of the North Islands. It was around a 10-hour journey to Wellington on a premium train as this, whose wide glass windows opened our view to green carpeted hillsides, regal conifers and dessiduous trees, herds of cows and sheep. The skies are ever so blue, with the hugging long white clouds. Rivetting.
The best part though was to be able to share a dining table between us. One to enjoy wraps, rocket salads, ginger beer, cookies and Earl Grey.
Even better was the camraderie among fellow travelers and not to forget family chat. We talked about the passing cities or counties, Palmerston North, Huntley, the Tasman sea and what else. The names are a bit of a blur but what remains etched in the memory is the conversation of the country's history, geography and culture. Indelible.
