For as long as I can remember, I have had a dream of owning an Airstream travel trailer. Over the years, a random thought would reminded me of that dream, and I would spend hours browsing for them on various on-line marketplaces. Sometimes I would pick up a freshly printed newspaper, flip to the classifieds, and briefly scan the bold printed headlines to see if the perfect one was sitting there for me. Other times I would pull into random strangers’ driveways and stare at one parked next to their house and think, “I wonder if they’d sell that me?” A few times I came close to pulling a decrepit one out of the woods, overgrown with weeds, with a wild idea of refurbishing it, and I came just as close to driving to a dealership in order to purchase a brand new one. After years of dreaming, the perfect one finally came to me. It wasn’t necessarily the model or the size that made it perfect, although it was exactly what I was looking for. For me, it was the transaction that took place between its previous owner, Ed and myself. Being an avid camper and growing up around a father who owned 8 of these trailers, there wasn’t much Ed didn’t know about the Airstream. He was very proud of this one in particular. We spent most of the afternoon together, opening every door, latch, window, awning and flipping every switch and turning every knob as he tried to share as much information about it in the limited amount of time we had together, which I’m grateful for! Before I hooked up and pulled away, Ed shook my hand and said, “I’m really glad it’s going to you”. I assured him I would take great care of it. I got the sense that this was a bittersweet moment for him as he watched us disappear around the curve. I only hope to make as many memories in it with my family, as he has with his in these classic travel trailers!
