Nestled between the Himalayan foothills, Rishikesh was the next stop for us travel lovers at Coddiwomple! Here are a few tidbits from one of the recent trips we organized to Rishikesh and Kanatal!
Although it's known as the Yoga Captial of India, there's a lot to do in this beautiful, spiritual place for non-yogis as well. We gave the traditional tourist spots a miss this time and opted for trekking and adventure sports instead. With the mighty Ganges on one side and the tall Himalayan ranges on the other, there's plenty of activities for every adventure enthusiast.
White water rafting in Ganges is a lifetime experience; the currents were fast and the water, cold and would probably make us go numb had we fallen over. We were hanging on to every word coming out of the instructor's mouth and holding on to the oars as the raft maneuvered itself through the gushing water. There were initial scares as we entered a rapid or two but the adrenaline after crossing one was awesome. Once the rapids were behind us, it was a calm cruise past the many temples and ashrams as we viewed life along the riverbank of the Ganges.
Our more daring trippers went jet-skiing on Tehri Lake in Kanatal, which is another hill station 3 hours away from Rishikesh. For those looking for a spot in the hills that still remains untouched by tourists, Kanatal is the perfect blend of scenic beauty, peace and fun. With immensely lush, green forests, Kanatal boasts of a paradise for trekking and camping fans. We spent a couple of our afternoons simply letting ourselves enjoy the many jungle trails with their breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys and evenings were spent lazing around Tehri dam before we ended up all huddled in front of the campfires at night.
One of the best treks we had was to the Surkanda Devi Temple which was for 2 km. The temple itself has some beautifully sculpted pillars and there was a picturesque scene of the valleys of Uttarakhand behind it. Because Kanatal is located in the hills.
