A common practice for summit hiking is to wake up early, starting near dusk and being finished in the afternoon. For winter hikes, since the day is shorter, this would generally be even more strict.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But honestly, I have never focused much on early wake ups. So, I started hiking this at 3pm. Feeling relaxed in my home mountains, I haven't brought much gear or food: just myself and a split board. And piles of fresh snow since it had been snowing quite a bit the days before.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The way up was swift and difficult to begin the journey, with every step sinking into deep snow. Then toward the top, carefully moving upward on a wind-blown face of thin ice which layed over grass and rock.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Breathing strongly while racing sunlight, I reached the summit at sunset in order to plan (with visibility) which route to descend.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Down with a snowboard would take about 20 minutes but it was getting dark very fast, so I finished the ride in a completely dark forest. Once in a while I could see the full moon, which gave a little light for orientation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After pulling the board apart for using the two planks, I skied through the silent and dark flat areas. Wolves were howling nearby and they seemed to be in all directions. I felt half excited, half nervous, and totally tired. Upon reaching the car the feeling was of a warrior, with a large true smile that only I could feel in the dark.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Some of these risks, I wouldn’t take while having other people around me, but if you want fresh air and to feel truly alive, come with me to the Caucuses, in the country of Georgia for #sharkbeargamarjoba trip this February. We'll snowboard and adventure the Caucasus Mountains, eating great foods and reconnecting with the wild.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The time is getting close, dates are still a bit flexible, Contact us via email sharkbear.travel at gmail.com (in bio) and we’ll share with you all of the information.
