It’s a thing that people introduce themselves on social media to their new followers, right? So, this is us….Michael and Cherita Rice, owners of Mad Priest Coffee Roasters (and our sweet girls, of course). We never really set out to be entrepreneurs, but thanks to Michael’s passionate, visionary leadership and Cherita’s faithful, day-to-day perseverance, here we are.
After a few years living in India and working in the coffee industry there, we moved to Chattanooga in 2015 and started Mad Priest soon after. We wanted to use the experience Michael had in the coffee world to not only “craft excellent coffee”, but also to “educate the curious and champion the displaced”, as our mission statement says.
We believe in producing the best coffee, and equally believe in creating a business that educates and empowers...that for-profit business can and should be used as a means to find a solution to the social struggles in our community, so we started out to hire refugees resettled in Chattanooga (with the help of Bridge Refugee Services). Since then, we’ve expanded the vision to work with various non-profits around the city and seek solutions to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion on a larger scale. We love bringing people together through hospitality and celebrating cultures...and we are so excited to share our new coffee & cocktail bar on Cherry Street, @madpriestcha, with Chattanooga starting Halloween. Come join us for The Great Triduum Grand Opening!
You can also listen more about us on the newest @thenoogabelle podcast which released today!

Coffee can be super volatile. Not only can it easily change, but the level of risk to grow it can be high. This is one of the many reasons we have high standards for QC and frequently cup all our roasts and new coffees. But also, we like to encounter each coffee that comes to us and all the work that has gone into it. And honestly, coffee is about TWO things. Drinking what you enjoy, and supporting the people that allowed you to get that cup, especially the farmers and producers. Don’t ever let some lofty idealistic crap make you feel like you can’t enjoy good coffee. Rest assured, the coffee you buy from us is done so with intentionality. Come by and grab a bag.

This little old sign has seen better days. What makes it special? It was built with the wood from the first pallet of beans we bought! And a lot has happened since then. We’re grateful to call this little city home and are excited about the road ahead! So cheers on this rainy Tuesday morning.

We recently worked with @angelscup with our Burundi and Ethiopian coffees. Our Burundi scored pretty high so now we’re shipping it out to all their “All Stars” 🌟
If you’re not familiar with Angels Cup, go check them out! If you’re interested in trying the Burundi, there’s still a little left on our website or in-store!
