At its peak in the 1850s, the Port Fairy's port was the second busiest in Australia. Wool, wheat and gold were loaded onto great sailing ships bound for England. The ships anchored in the bay while goods and passengers were ferried back and forth from the wharf on smaller craft, known as lighters.
The wharf is a wonderful place to relax and watch the world drift by. The Norfolk pines and colonial buildings form a picturesque backdrop to the tranquil waters of the Moyne River. Here you can breath the fresh, sea air as you meander along the wharf, enjoy fish n' chips at the water's edge, or drop in a line for a spot of fishing. #iamportfairy#iamgreatoceanroad

So why was Port Fairy named Port Fairy!
In 1828, Captain James Wishart, of the cutter Fairy, having buried the body of a sealer, W. Hardman, on Julia Percy Island, went in a whaleboat in pursuit of seven escaped convicts from Van Diemen's Land, whom he had on board his vessel, having arrested them on an island in Bass Strait.
While the captain was at the funeral they had made off with one of the cutter's whaleboats. After a strenuous effort, handicapped by a large storm, the captain ended the unsuccessful chase with an exhausted crew. Luckily he found shelter for the night in a little bay and to his delight, at daybreak, he found that he was at the mouth of an excellent river.
He named the bay “Port Fairy”, in honour of his tiny ship.

Lady Julia Percy Island is home to more than 4000 seals, fairy penguins, birds of prey and has the largest Australian rookeries of fairy prions and driving petrels. Many of the bird species can be viewed from The Crags as they move across the ocean in search of feeding grounds. #crags#deenmaar
