The colours on this false banana leaf tree are positively irridescent - false banana leaf is used to make a flour that you make gojo from, a flat bread that is lightly toasted and eaten with a special meat dish called kitfo (normally eaten raw, like steak tartare). #addistales#addisababa#habesha#zomamuseum
[ZOMA MUSEUM] The ZOMA is not only a museum, it is first and formost a place of education where young like old are invited to learn, read and experience the qualities sustainability has to offer to society.
The two co-founders of Zoma, Meskerem Assegued and Elias Sime, stress that education is the only way to implement any shared social value... thus explaining the creation of the first sustainable "museum" (in the educational sense of the word) in Ethiopia.
[ZOMA MUSEUM] The Piaggio Baboon is both a physical and intellectual journey.
An adventure that starts by a dream, and stimulating experiences in Ethiopia, before actually taking place in Europe.
One of these experiences is the discovery of The ZOMA Museum in Addis Ababa.
Unlike iconic and monumental museums, with it's vernacular aesthetics, this serie of small galleries humbly immerses itself in lavishing nature... #zoma#zomamuseum#addisababa#addisababaethiopia#ethiopia#sustainable#sustainability#nomad#nomadlife
Congratulations to Elias Sime and Meskerem Assegued on the grand opening of @zoma.museum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The museum has been under construction for the past four years and will officially open to the public on Sunday, March 24 at 2 pm. The opening will feature an exhibition of work by Zoma co-founder Elias Sime, a contemporary dance performance by Destino Dance Company Ethiopia and a musical performance by Girum Gizaw's jazz quartet, as well as art workshops for adults and children. The opening is free and open to the public.
Zoma Museum is a dream 25 years in the making, inspired by the timeless and structurally sound vernacular architecture of Ethiopia. It is named for Zoma Shiferraw, a young Ethiopian artist who died of cancer in 1979.
Zoma Museum is an environmentally conscious art institution in Addis Ababa. Zoma's mission is centered around education and the teaching of building methods that have demonstrated their abilities to withstand the ravages of time while maintaining their grace and beauty. The museum’s aim is to showcase innovative and cutting-edge art and architecture in a vernacular museum where the old and the new merge. To this end, Zoma is built using traditional construction techniques. The building materials include mud, straw, stone, wood, and cement.
Zoma's facilities include a gallery, library, children's center, edible garden, elementary school, art and vernacular school, amphitheater and museum shop.

Zoma is an international in-progress project for the opening of a museum of arts in Addis. The architecture of the place is inspired by the vernacular Ethiopian architecture - made and hand-decorated in mud.
We really loved the place ❤️

Previewed Zoma Museum, which is local to us and opens in March 2018. It’s nice to have more places to go with her. There’s going to be a cafe and children’s room. There’s already a school attached and she loved the playground. I was impressed with the huge vegetable and gardens, which will be used in the cafe and the traditional building techniques. The museum uses mud and the buildings go through the metamorphosis of a caterpillar 🐛. The buildings are art in themselves. Grace understood the story they were trying to tell from #thehungerycaterpillar when I first saw mud houses here I didn’t understand how strong they are and how easy they are to repair. Also environmentally friendly. Now to get #oldairportplaygroup involved with the gardening #mudbuildings#addislife#ethiopia#artinaddis#thingstodowithgrace#zomamuseum
We can't wait for the opening of the new Zoma Museum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, founded by artist Elias Sime and curator Meskerem Asegued. The museum's earthen structures and traditional gardens pay homage to Ethiopia's indigenous architecture, making it the perfect place to showcase contemporary African art. The museum will open on June 19th. Scroll through for a sneak peek!⠀

Pictures from Amsterdam Art x ArtReview Conference panel discussion titled 'Making histories: how does the past reflect the present?' The panelists discussed the relationship between the cultural history of the locations of museums and their programing. Among the panelists, Meskerem Assegued, co-founder of Zoma Museum, focused on vernacular architecture and how it is "the architecture of the future". .
