From @fillo_barberss' private collection scarce postcard made by italian "Domenica del Corriere" artist Walter Molino, celebrating italian Decima Mas Barbarigo Battalion arriving to Anzio-Nettuno front, on 19 march 1944.
Ozzies in Pozières. Photographed here is the “Gibraltar” bunker at the Western end of Pozières, 28 August 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. The bunker was an Observation Post from which the whole battlefield of 1 July 1916 was visible. To the left stands the 1st Australian Division Memorial.
The 1st Australian Division was raised on the outbreak of the war in August 1914. It fought at Gallipoli in 1915 and was then transferred to #France in March 1916. They took over the front line on 20 July 1916. What became known as the Battle of Pozières Ridge was its first major battle in France. ————————————————————
Situated on the highest part of the plateau, Pozières was heavily fortified with numerous bunkers, including one later named by the #Australians as “Gibraltar” on the Western edge of the village. The assault on the village commenced just after midnight on 23 July 1916; the Australians were soon in command of the edge of the village. #Soldiers charged and captured “Gibraltar” OP in a rush during the afternoon. Having breached the Germans’ defences the Australians were then subjected to three days of intensive bombardment. The Australians remained undeterred and pushed deeper into the village. ————————————————————
The Division was eventually relieved on the 26th July by the 2nd Division AIF. In less than a week, the cost to the 1st Australian Division was over 5,000 men killed and wounded.

A joint bombing mission of German territory, led by the USSR and the United States in 1944, was intended to improve their bilateral relations. Since the day of their entry into the Second World War in December 1941, the United States had planned to use Soviet airfields to undertake major air raids against Germany. For years, however, this idea has met with limited resistance from Moscow. #Wwii#ww2#worldwar2#ww2history#worldwar#worldwartwo#1939#1940#1941#secondworldwar#1942#1943#1944#1945#history#french#war#soldier#ww1#guerre#arme#army#reich#dday#allemagne#ss#soldat#wehrmacht#nazi

#FunFactFriday The first portable toilets were used in the shipyards during World War II when they realized that employees were taking too long to trek from the ships back to the docks to use the restroom. These first porta potties were constructed with wood or metal.
British soldier of the 20th Division offers a German prisoner a flask of water during the Operation Michael, March 22, 1918.
I've posted this image some times before, but I thought I'd repost it again today on its anniversary - the photo was taken today 101 years ago.
This photograph truly displays the kind of compassion and empathy the enemy soldiers had for each other in the First World War. These men weren't their enemies - the war itself was.
In the Operation Michael - the first German attack of their Spring Offensive - from March 21 - April 5, 1918, some 5,000 German prisoners were captured by the British, despite the Germans being the ones attacking.
In turn the Germans captured an immense 77,000 British prisoners in the Operation Michael - accounting for ~42% of the total amount of British prisoners captured in the First World War - of whom 21,000 were captured on March 21, 1918.
The British suffered a further 17,000 casualties includong 8,500 killed on March 21, 1918, making it the second bloodiest day in British military history - only behind the infamous first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Captain Edwin "Bill" Fisher of the 377th Fighter Squadron, 362nd Fighter Group, stands on the nose of his P-47 Thunderbolt "Shirley Jane III" at an airfield in France, summer/fall, 1944. -
You can see Fisher was quite the decorated pilot, having completed dozens of sorties against a number of targets. He was a 7 victory ace, a rare feat even though the Allies had air superiority. He bombed 3 V-1 "buzzbomb" launch sites, strafed 25 trucks/vehicles, strafed 5 trains, completed a combined 65 bomb runs, and expended all of his ammuntion 15 times. The broom signifies that all ammunition was spent, something that the pilots took from Navy submariners who would paint a broom everytime they used all torpedoes. Fisher would survive the war and rack up even more victories and tallies. In 1947, he was killed in a freak aerial accident. ---------------------------------------------------
The P-47s in France during 1944 were one of the most vital assets provided to the advancing troops on the ground. They provided close air support, and strafed German troops and supply lines endlessly all day. The Allied strafing campaigns in France during 1944 were spearheaded by the P-47 and British Typhoon, who rendered the Germans were unable to bring adequate troops and supplies to the frontlines for weeks. It was simply too risky to move troops during daylight. The strafing became so common that the Germans called it "Steel Weather." However, the success of the strafing came at a price. It required the pilots to push their aircraft to the limit and brave withering fire from a low altitude day after day. Casualties among the pilots mounted and their survival rate remained low, this would remain true throughout the war. The men who flew the "Jug" as she was affectionately known had nerves of steel, despite the fact that death or horrible injury was almost guaranteed. I have the upmost respect for them and plan on beginning to write a book documenting their trials soon. Leave your ideas on this and for the book and her title below! - - #ww2#worldwar2#france#1944#p47#pilotsofinstagram#pilots#historical#wwii#normandy#normandie#fighterpilot#topgun#boeing#republic#learn#nerd
Немецкий солдат в полной мере ощутивщий Драг нах Остен! German soldiers ...
