What is Influence?
I’ve been thinking a lot about the ways I have been influenced. I have spent my entire life working in photography and advertising, and you would think that being a part of the machine makes you immune to it - but I see it in myself. From clothing and skincare brand that I find myself just *needing* (hi @forloveandlemons & @sundayriley) to travel destinations, to trends in photography and color processing. It’s hard to figure out exactly in what ways I’m seeing things and thinking “this is perfect for me” versus seeing things and thinking “I want this because I’m seeing it on lots of people/in lots of photos.”
Every time I do an interview, I am always asked for what advice I have for people that want to do what I do. And I always say that nothing stands out like passion for what you’re doing and originality - it’s a crowded world, but there is always room for someone unique. And I question, am I unique or original enough to say this? Photography has undoubtably been my biggest passion in life, but do I fall into the influence more than I create? What responsibility do I have with this tiny little platform of mine?
In what ways do you think you are influenced? What do you look for?
PS. This is one of my favorite images from India from a while ago. I had to photoshop out a LOT of people in the background and we got yelled at multiple times for “modeling” at this site. Apparently, selfies are cool, but twirling is unacceptable.
