This table has been in the works for over a year now and I’ve learned a lot along the way. For me, this project had a lot of firsts including figuring out how to build a router sled then flattening such a large piece of wood. Buying a steel cut off saw @makitatools, and welder from @lincolnelectric and figuring out how to design and weld together the steel legs. This project is what got me interested in taking welding classes at my local community college and after welding some, I’ve learned how valuable a nice flat welding table is such as @weldtables . At one point I had 5 coats of polyurethane on this table but I didn’t like the way it came out. So, I took my belt sander and took all the finish off and then decided to put 9,000 volts of electricity through it. At this point Kristin (owner of the table) contacted me and wanted to put her own style into the table. So, I cut 4 inches off each end, added Bora Bora Blue from @blackdiamondpigments_com into epoxy from @ecopoxy and finished it with @odiesoil. This is also the 1st time I’ve shipped something so large. .
The point of this story is every project has its challenges but also presents opportunity to grow and build on the skills you’ve learned from the previous project. People ask me all the time how they should get started in wood working? Take classes, find an apprentice, watch youtube, trial and error. There’s no right or wrong answer. You have to find what works for you and eventually as long as you don’t give up you can only succeed. The only really important thing I can recommend is to learn about the tools you’re unfamiliar with before using them. No one wants to loose a finger (at least I don’t think so) .
I’d love to hear about any stories y’all have that can encourage others to start word working or anything that you want to share that is beneficial to someone willing to learn! Thanks to everyone for your support
