Balat, Istanbul. Turkey. The Fener-Balat quarter, once the little Greece of Istanbul, is now one of the city’s trendy design districts and regaining the international feel of its past. Balat is one of the best places in Istanbul for a local experience since women still gather on doorsteps, while men sit in the tea houses, kids kick balls around in the streets and lines of washing can be seen overhead. Odd shops and colorful houses have become iconic pictures on the Internet.
A 6am swim and sunrise...
Sometimes you can’t help but fall in love with a beautiful place. Then you find out there’s so much more to it than its pretty facade. This is how a place can inspire meaningful change.
Responsible and caring, @sixsensesuluwatu is committed to preserving the environment through its sustainable operations. With their in-house water filtration system, they save approximately 9000 plastic bottles per month. That’s wonderful! They implement ways to give back to their surrounding community too. I’m so inspired this conscientious brand.
While wandering around Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, with #heartlandjpn , I enjoyed entering and explore a number of historic residences - both merchant and samurai. Hagi also has a sightseeing boat ride that provides a different perspective of these preservation districts. And, for those interested in World Heritage Sites - there is a collection of sightseeing spots connected to Japan's industrialization and modernization.
Getting there: 4 1/2 hours from Tokyo to Shin-Yamaguchi Station. Then, a one hour bus ride. Or, a 1 1/2 hours by plane to Yamaguchi Ube Airport. Then, 90 minutes by a shared 'set-fee' taxi. @excursions_japan#japan#hagi#yamaguchi#historicdistrict
Hagi, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, is another fantastic 'off the beaten path' destination. The town has one of Japan's best preserved historical districts. Visitors can visit impressive castle ruins, then spend hours wandering this old merchant district (on foot or by rental bicycle).
You can also take the work out of planning by traveling there with #heartlandjpn@excursions_japan#japan#hagi#historicdistrict
Enjoying the birds of paradise...
Woke to the birds singing, jumped on my yoga mat, and then went for a dip in the pool. Movement after long travels feels so good. With severe jet lag, catching the sunrise with a morning yoga practice was the perfect way to push the reset button and find some balance to begin a busy day ahead.
