SXSW is really what you choose to make it, I think. I choose to make it about going to expos, enjoying bands I’ve never heard of, and exploring Austin. Last time was simply a blast and I looked forward to having a similar experience. Except, I kinda sorta didn’t. You see, last year I saw a free Talib Kweli show at Whole Foods and this year the headliner at the same venue was Hanson. Yes, MmmmMmmm Bop Hanson, that Hanson... then the Latin music festival they had last year at the outdoor auditorium was replaced by Garth Brooks. Apparently Mr. Brooks is a really big deal, but I’m no fan of country music. Oh, and I found these changes by actually walking to each venue. I don’t suggest this and would recommend just looking up who’s performing as walking in Texas heat is pain.
I did still attend some expos, the gaming expo was awesome as VR gaming was all the rage. After the expo, I did the same as last year and walked up and down Congress and trying Home Slice Pizza for the first time. I’m sure it’s a amazing, but a crowded and hot SXSW experience would lead to say it’s not that worth it.
As the sun began to set, just like all romantics do, I went over to 6th St. to check out the shit show going on. Much of the same happens every year on 6th St., drunk people all-around. The only difference when you go for SXSW is that almost every bar is hosting a band and as you walk down the street it all just sounds like mush. I killed a good amount of time here, but then to keep my Mexico-filled week alive I headed to 5th St. to check out the Mexic-Arte Museum which is a Mexican art museum that I really recommend people should check out!
To wrap-up my day, I bought a ticket to see T.I., 21 Savage, Lil’ Yachty, and more at a rooftop bar called Summit on 5th St. You know, I only bought the ticket to see T.I., but he didn’t come out until 2am and when he did, he kept passing the mic to his entourage for them to perform. Man, I came to see T.I. and I left after he passed the mic to the 2nd or 3rd person. It was too late to be dealing with all that.
Overall, it was a good SXSW experience, but I didn’t explore Austin like I wanted, but there’s always a next time.
Hi you guyyysss! I’ve been super inactive. But here I am back (I hope). I’ve been super busy moving and catching up with family and specially with Ramadan. To all you Muslim community, Ramadan Mubarak, 10 days already, it’s mad.
