Lynn S. Atkinson, Jr. Contractor. Los Angeles, Cal. (Photo taken in 2018 by @apaperbackwriter in Delano, CA). This one submitted by Emma Gallegos has led me to a construction family dynasty! I’ll get into all that in a bit, but, first, Lynn S. Atkinson, Jr. was the grandson of George W. Atkinson (1836-1905) who was a stone mason. George had at least ten children with Nancy J. Wilson Atkinson and three of those (Walter W., Guy F., and Lynn S. Sr.) also joined the industry. A Collection Guide of the Online Archive of California states: “Lynn and Walter relocated from Colorado to Southern California early in the 20th century. Guy Atkinson founded Guy F. Atkinson Construction in the 1920s, specializing in dam projects and other major infrastructure projects in the West. Lynn S. Atkinson was responsible for the construction of numerous schools and public buildings in Colorado Springs and the Los Angeles area and, later, dams and public works.” Our boy Lynn, Jr. was the eldest son of his parents and eventually became head of Atkinson Construction Company and was based in Los Angeles. In fact, this sidewalk stamp might be from his first job on his own! [Contractor, Volume 23, McGraw Publishing Company (1916).] He was a member of the Southern California Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America in the General Building Contractors category [Los Angeles Annual Builders Guide: Handbook for Architects and Builders, Inter-State Educational Association (1923).] It looks like his office was at 917 Investment Building, which I believe was the Los Angeles Investment Building at 8th and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles [Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, Volume 18 (1916)]. I found bids in Tulare County, CA. Plus, this notice that he had the contract to build the Cave Creek flood control dam near Phoenix, Arizona for $372,294 [Southwest Builder and Contractor, F.W. Dodge Company (1922)]. To be continued... #sidewalk#contractorstamp#losangeles#delano#tulare#phoenix
