Did you know that statistically we under estimate our food intake by up to 50%! Whether it be for weight management or performance, consuming the appropriate amount of food and nutrients is paramount in order to reach your goals. .
An example would be a client that comes to me and can’t seem to lose weight while only consuming “1200kcal” and they feel there must a more complex reason why they can’t seem to shift the weight (eg. hormones, thyroid, etc.). We sit down and discuss their foods and agree to do an honest food diary over the next seven days. It’s important to include the weekends in a sample diary, as this where a lot of people tend to undo their weekday efforts.
I instruct them to ensure they fill out the food diary on their phone while they consume each meal rather than retrospectively so memory slip can be minimised.
They should be sure to include the brand of food (if applicable) and preparation method (cooking methods may change nutrient levels), as well as time of day and food quantity.
After the seven days, it becomes clear the client is consuming low calorie meals, however, is over eating on high calorie snacks while at their desk, as well as over indulging over the weekend which puts their weekly intake into a caloric surplus.
In some cases just adding in a food diary is enough for a client to realise they are over eating (if their goals are body composition related) and the simple addition of a food diary is enough for them to stop. .
As a whole, a food diary is a great way to keep track of the foods you eat and whether your goals are weight related, or performance, may help you achieve your goals sooner
