If you are on Rarotonga and what to both see and get an authentic feel for the island I would highly recommend taking the Raro Mountain Safari Tour. It is intimate tour done conducted in an a jeep made to traverse mountains that takes you to places that the other tours can not, such as up to the highest point on the island that you can reach by vehicle, is owned and operated by locals, tells you frank and funny stories about the history and life of the island, and then takes to the beach for a barbecue.
The highlights of the tour was Ngatangiia Harbour, Te Rua Manga, and a visit to the Arai-te-Tonga Marae. Ngatangiia Harbour is where the seven vakas, wakas in New Zealand, left around 700 years ago for New Zealand. We drove up to a lookout from which we got a good look at Te Rua Manga, The Needle, a lesson on how to properly open a coconut, and a goregous view of the Avatiu Valley and the ocean. The tour guides also took us to their Marae, the Arai-te-Tonga, which is the principle Koutu and Marae of the Makea tribe. It is currently part of an archaeological excavation project.
It was a great way to spend a morning.
Much thanks to Raro Mountain Safari Tours and Aro'a Beachside Inn for the recommendation.
The most challenging thing Ive done so far this year is climbing up “the needle”. There are places where you will need to use tree roots for handholds & ropes that are provided. But worth it! Took a 360 shot via drone :)
Travel to a remote island in the South Pacific. Climb a steep trail to a rocky peak, slipping through mud and falling over tree roots. There, at a fork in the trail, you will meet a rooster. He will follow you as you scramble up ropes along a cliff face, laughing at your struggle. Then, at the top of the highest mountain, the rooster will pose his handsome self so you may bask in his glory. He might even tell you a riddle about your future if you give him some of your sandwich.

I love challenging myself and Te Rua Manga was definitely that. Heights scare the absolute shit out of me but it was so amazing. Keen to climb more mountains and if you know any in the Brisbane area, hit me up! Always looking for hiking buddies too #TeRuaManga#theneedle#hiking#raratonga
Doing the cross island hike through Rarotonga was harder then I expected but the wild jungle was rewarding in some way... 😅🌿🌿🌿 Next time I just have to remember to bring proper shoes... If you want to know more about this track, I wrote the whole article about it - link bio...😎✌🏼 Do you like hiking when you're on holiday?
🇸🇰 Tento hike cez stred ostrova Rarotongy bol narocnejsi ako som ocakavala a trochu som ho podcenila vyberom obuvi... 😂🌿🌿🌿 Dzungla vsak bola naozaj nadherna! Ak chcete vediet viac, o celej skusenosti som napisala clanok, ktory mozete najst v biu... 😎✌🏼
Te Rua Manga ‘ent no needle, it’s 2 rock spires. Basic Te Reo will get you a long way, contrary to popular belief. I’m not even in NZ.
Swipe right for the cock of the rock - an unmoving, silent sentinel in the rain.
