We got up super early this morning to visit the Hakodate Morning Market. I got to eat the uni straight out of the urchin! My husband and sister were not interested in sharing. #teachertravels#eatingjapan#freshuni
Day 4- We had a great visit at the Afro-Peruano museum, guided by one of the director who was so impressed by what we knew and our goal for learning more- helping our students understand the diversity and shared history of Latin Americans.
Lunch was at an idyllic little Italian pizzeria and our pizza exemplified the Peruvian fusion- lomo saltado on brick oven fired pizza! Of course we had chicha morada to drink, it's like sweet tea in the south. 😉
From there we made our way along the coast to check out the surfing scene before our flight to Cusco. 🏄
At the hotel in Cusco, we were welcomed with the traditional drink to help us overcome any altitud sickness. Looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!! Stay tuned! #fftfellow#teamsoladventures#pefchattanooga#teachertravels#spanishteacher#chattacubana#afroperuano#afrolatino#pizzalomosaltado#tedecoca#peru
Our first two days of vacation were travel days. Minneapolis 🇺🇸—Toronto 🇨🇦 — Amsterdam 🇳🇱 — Brussels 🇧🇪— Paris 🇫🇷Looking forward to the days off. Using my summer to actually take a break. Just finished my 7th year of teaching and I’m not sure I’ve ever really gave my chance a chance to reset. Partner just finished his 1st year of teaching and I’m not giving him a chance to create bad summer habits. #teachertravels#teacheronbreak#teacherselfcare#teacherstakeoneurope
Our final sunset in Sri Lanka - thank you for the past 2 weeks, they were absolutely unforgettable
As I write this, by no means am I trying to convince anyone that they should or shouldn't visit Sri Lanka. I just want to share by my experience.
I felt safe and protected everywhere we went. The Sri Lankan people are so thankful to tourists for continuing to come over and explore their country. They are so proud of their country and want to share its beauty with the world. So often we had locals thank us for travelling to Sri Lanka and visiting their business. It broke my heart to see so many places that were closed for the season because of the lack of tourists, but the locals were all so hopeful that "soon they will come back". I promised everyone I spoke to that I would come home and honestly share my experience, so this is me doing just that
Day three (part 1)- Look at us!!! We're official. We completely nerded out International Potato Center. In the short time we were there, everything we saw, heard and talked about (even with the director himself!!), was exciting and had our minds whirling with ideas and future collaborations.
Peru didn't just give the world potato, but also other superfoods like maca and yacon (natural sweetener from a root). CIP even gifted us books AND homework... They challenged us to pose this question to our students "What would the world be like without the potato?" #fftfellow#pefchattanooga#rbway#ivyacademy#spanishteacher#teachertravels#lifewithoutpotatoes#potato#papas#yacon#maca#peru
Day two- Don't mind our tired faces...we had a fantastic day yesterday!! We began our day in Barrio Chino, exploring the myriad of stores with their random tchotchkes and enjoyed our first Chinese-Peruvian fusion meal (called chifa...dervived from 吃饭 -to eat) with Inka Cola and chicha morada.
We saw a cool mural as made our to the the cathedral and catacombs of San Francisco to explore (No photos bc of the signs saying not to...😜🤔🤫) the history.
After being thoroughly spooked (Jaime- "What if a earthquake happens while we are down here?"🙄😬), we went to the Chocolate Museum and took a class "From bean to bar" and made 2 styles of chocolate drinks and our own dark chocolate candies. 🍫☕We made a new friend and had a fantastic, very patient teacher as we were perfect examples of ADD joksters. Definitely gained insight on how to present/lead lessons on cacao.
Filled to the brim with delicious dark chocolate, we continued our way to the Plaza mayor (saw a girl in her quince dress having a photo shoot).
As we made our way back to the car that evening, we found another beautiful mural.
These 10 photos are just snapshots of a the 200+ we took of our day to share with our students and colleagues. #fftfellow#pefchattanooga#teamsoladventures#spanishteacher#teachertravels#chinatown#chifa#chocomuseo#cacao#plazamayor#muralart#catacombs#rbway#ivyacademy#chattacubana
I’ve been meaning to make it to hot springs in the area and finally did! The trail was absolutely beautiful - a flat hike through a deciduous forest along a creek made this Midwest soul feel at home. The springs were stinky and icky (albeit pretty), but felt so nice on muscles aching from a couple days of hiking. I was surprised how many people were there in the middle of a cloudy Tuesday, especially with the road closed 1.5 miles from the trailhead, but shoutout to the dad from New York who showed us the best pool. You the real MVP.
