📍Grand Central Terminal or Grand Central Station as it is more often referred to, can be found on almost everyone’s list of what to do in New York. The Station was built by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1869. After an accident in 1902, steam trains were outlawed and the electrification of the railway resulted in a new and larger station being built. Buildings and apartments were included in this grand design and on February 2nd 1913, Grand Central Terminal was reopened.
New York City has my heart, forever and always. It’s been my dream to live there since I was 8 years old. Someday... I will.
For now, I’m SO EXCITED to share my love and memories of the city with my family this weekend!
My pappy was one of a kind. He would let me brush his hair (a thin little comb over) all day if I wanted to. He was the ONLY person I’d let cut my hang nails when I was tiny. He’d drive across town to do it for me. I remember when I was about 4 years old, Mr. Rogers was on TV talking about dinosaurs and I screamed at the top of my lungs.... “NOOOO! I don’t want Pappy to be EXTINCT!” He retired from the steel mills in Pennsylvania and moved to NYC sometime between when I was 5 and 8 years old. 3 of his 9 kids lived there. He became a superintendent of a building on the Upper East Side. Central Park was just outside the front door. That place was like a dream, complete with funny stories of all of the celebrities who lived there.
I was 8 years old on my first trip to NYC. It was the most magical experience of my life. It was Thanksgiving, and we went to visit pappy and Aunt Mary. Pappy’s apartment was huge in my mind, but Aunt Mary was my real-life hero and I decided on that trip, that I wanted to live in NYC like she did - with multiple roomies in a teeny, tiny 2-room apartment. That was my DREAM LIFE, pretty much until Gracie was born!
We went to Central Park to watch the balloons being blown up before the Macy’s Parade. And we got to actually sit along the parade route and watch the most magnificent event I’d ever seen. The Macy’s Parade has been my favorite-favorite-favorite annual event ever since. That was the fall after Dirty Dancing was released and I’ll never forget seeing Patrick Swayze on a white horse, dressed in an all white cowboy outfit! I thought I’d never love again! 💕
I’ve returned many times since, but that trip is when my love affair with NYC began.
I’ve been planning this trip for months and months. I get to share ALL of my favorites with my now favorite people - MY little family - for the first time. I can’t wait!!!
