Taiwan! The land of bubble tea! You can bet that this 🙋🏻♀️bubble tea addict drank bubble tea every SINGLE DAY (um, my record was drinking four bubble teas in one day🐷. Yeah, I'm an addict. In my defence though, two of them was with my uni friend). Have you been to Taiwan or is it on your to-visit list?⠀
As you may recall from my previous IG posts, I was supposed to spend a total of six months in Taiwan during my year of travel before deciding to stay back in Thailand 🇹🇭. Actually, the original plan was to spend a year in Taiwan (to learn Mandarin!) and use it as a base to travel around Asia. But like most things in life, nothing ever follows the plan you set out for yourself 🤷🏻♀️. ⠀
Regardless, I still managed to spend almost three months in Taiwan. And for that, Taiwan will always have a place in my heart
Simple. Elegant. Chocolaty.
I’m excited about this bottle of Kavalan Port Cask for a couple reasons: 1st because it’s delicious, and 2nd because I helped pick it.
Uptown Spirits was lucky enough to be the 1st individual bottle shop in California to get their own Kavalan barrel back in October. They asked me to help them pick through some samples of different Port and Sherry for their selection. At the onset, I was tempted to just recommend the Sherry Cask for a bottling because I love anything and everything sherry. When I did a blind taste of the Port next to the Sherry however, I consistently came back to the Port as my favorite.
The Sherry Cask, while delicious and sweet, felt a little over proofed and hot from the start. The Sherry flavor was also pretty strong, and made it hard to pick out individual flavors.
The Port, while a little over ported, was a little better balanced from the get go and had an overall delicious chocolate flavor. After a little bit of breathing time and a couple drops of water, it opened right up into a really enjoyable drink.
Whiskey Name: Port Cask (Uptown Spirits Bottling)
Mash bill: 100% malted barley
Color: Raisins and amber.
Nose: Lots and lots of chocolate followed by dark fruits and Port.
Palate: Dark chocolate! Port! Fruit forward with a nutty taste. If you like Port, you will like this.
Finish: Medium finish that rides off into the sunset.
Overall Rating: 87
This one comes with a little story:
Taiwan is still scattered with “veterans villages“. These villages had been built hastily, with cheap materials. They gave simple housing to former soldiers and their families, after they retreated from China. In the last twenty years these villages have been disappearing, one by one. The government gave the land to building companies, providing in exchange new decent apartments to the surviving veterans or their families. Rainbow Village in Taichung is one of these veterans villages. It was already being torn down house by house. But, one of the last village residents, Mr.Huang, refused to leave his home. One day he started to paint the empty and dying village. He painted walls, roofs, floors, fences, doors, windows, literally everything in bright colours. The place, originally destined to give way to new skyscrapers, suddenly attracted visitors from all over the island, making it a one of a kind sightseeing spot. And here it comes: The local government was then forced to suspend the demolition and Mr.Huang was to keep his home. 🏚️🖤 Ain't that a story for all you hopeless romantics out there? 🤗
