Dance name: The Roc
舞蹈名称：大鹏 “Up into the sky, with the wind the roc goes,
To the heaven it reaches, a million miles above.”
—— “To Li Yong”
Description: Roc is a magical bird described in Daoist mythology “A Happy Excursion” that represents ideal and freedom. Li Bai often use it as a metaphor of himself. At the end of our dance drama, the dance “The Roc” is a summary of the poet’s dramatic life. Who can fly as free as Roc? Who can live as free as Li Bai? People often call Li Bai the Banished Immortal from Heaven. Now he become a Roc and finally return home.
Dance name: Ode to Solitude
舞蹈名称：孤云闲 “Vanished are the birds upon soaring high,
Save a cloud solitary, floats freely by.”
—— “Sitting Alone at Mount Jingting”
Description: During his first sixty years, Li Bai once became the favorite of the emperor, and once became a prisoner whose life rested in others’ hands. He once received the warmest welcome wherever he went and was once exiled to the end of the earth. Having experienced all of that, fame and success can no longer worry Li Bai. He finally embraced life and nature. Even the bird and clouds can become his genuine friends. This dance expresses Li Bai’s elevated mental state. Spiritually, he approached immortality.

Dance name: Drinking Alone under the Moon
舞蹈名称：月下独酌 “I sing and the moon lingers,
I dance and my shadow whirled under.
In my sober moments we rejoiced together,
Once I am drunk, it is a company no longer.”

Description: Li Bai might enjoy the peaceful and simple rural life, but deep in his mind, he still dreamt to become a minister, a general, somebody serves the country and the people. The villagers cannot understand the poet’s ambitions, so Li Bai decided to share his thoughts with the moon. This is a dance of Li Bai with the moon and his shadow. The dance may first seem joyful, but behind the rejoice is a sense of spiritual loneliness. “Besides the moon and my shadow, who can understand me?”

Dance name: The Villagers
舞蹈名称：围屋 “To sail off in a skiff I was about;
Sudden I heard singing ashore all out.”
—— Presented to Wang Lun
Description: During his middle ages, Li Bai toured throughout the countryside of China. He enjoyed making friends with villagers and Wang Lun was one of them. When the poet was leaving Wang Lun’s home at Peach Blossom Pond, Wang led a group of villagers to send Li Bai off with dances and songs. To express his gratitude to Wang, Li Bai wrote the poem “Presented to Wang Lun”. This dance is a depiction of a farewell party held by the villagers wearing traditional customs.

Dance Name: White Linens
舞蹈名称：白纻 “They sing the songs of ‘White Linens along Green Waters’, wave their sleeves and dance for the dear gentlemen.”

Description: White Linen was originally a type of cloth known for its lightness produced in Southeast China. During the Three Kingdoms Period, a genre of dance appeared with the name “White Linen”, using simple and gentle body movements to portray the labor of girls working in the textile workshops. After Li Bai left the Tang capital Changan, he went to the countryside. This dance of White Linens girls shows Li Bai’s idyllic vison for a simple and peaceful lifestyle.
Dance name: Bring in the Wine
舞蹈名称：将进酒 “We should fully enjoy ourselves when we feel pleased,
Let not golden chalices mirror the moon without spirits.”
—— Bring in the Wine
Description: According to legend, Li Bai was also the second greatest swordsman of the Tang Dynasty. The sword dance “Bring in the Wine” is a statement of Li Bai’s attitude towards life. The poem of the same name was written while Li Bai was drinking with his friends after Courtier Gao edged him out of the court. Li Bai had mixed sentiments. He felt angry towards the injustice he experienced and was sorry for aging while not gaining success. Yet, he was also confident he would eventually find his own value and concluded that nothing matters as long as he has wine and freedom.

Dance name: Farewell to Hanlin Academy
舞蹈名称：翰林别 “Not even the emperor could summon him from the tavern,
As he sang and declared: ‘I am the god of wine!’ ”
——Song of Eight Drinking Immortals
Description: Recognized by the emperor, Li Bai received a position at the imperial academy (Hanlin Academy). However, as a born liberalist, he refused to be confined in an office and indulged himself in wine houses of Changan. This dance depicts the imaginary wonderland in Li Bai’s drunken dreams with the aroma of wine personified by dancing fairies. Unfortunately, Li Bai’s unconstraint life style also irritated the powerful Courtier Gao, and his days at the Hanlin Academy was coming to an end.

Dance name: A Song for Peaceful and Tranquil Times
舞蹈名称：清平调 “Splendid clouds and flowers reminds us of Lady Yang's beauty,
Her charm is ever-present in sill-crossing spring breezes and condensate dews.”
——A Song for Peaceful and Tranquil Times
Description: Lady Yang was the favorite consort of Emperor Xuanzong. As the best poet of the time, Li Bai was commissioned to compose a eulogy of her unparalleled beauty. In the Songs for Peaceful and Tranquil Times, Li Bai compared Lady Yang to the flower Mu Dan, a representation of wealth and honor in Chinese literature. This group dance of the palace maids, climaxing with the Lady’s virtuoso solo, is an exhibition of the Lady’s superior status. From a larger perspective, the dance also manifests how Tang dynasty Changan serves as a cultural capital where literary art as well as performing art flourishes.
Li Bai, like us, was once a young fellow urging for a successful career, in his case, political career. This dance is his first impression of the Tang Dynasty imperial court.
Dance name: The Imperial Court
舞蹈名称：盛世 “To the heavenly god I laugh, towards the imperial capital I go.
How can thou sayest I am not a hero!”
—— Farewell to children at Nanling before heading to the capital
Description: In Li Bai’s youth, an era of political stability and economic prosperity, the Tang dynasty was one of the strongest empires in the world. In prison, Li Bais dreams of his first sight of the imperial court. Ministers and courtiers wearing splendid court dresses marching in the royal palace is a miniature of the golden age and a reflection of the young poet’s aspirations.

Dance description day three, meet our long sleeve fairies!
Dance name: Han Sleeves Dance
舞蹈名称：汉洛颜子兮 “Her body soars lightly like a startled swan,
Gracefully, like a dragon in flight。
Dim as the moon mantled in filmy clouds,
Restless as snow whirled by the driving wind.”
——Cao Zhi “The Goddess of the Luo” “翩若惊鸿，婉若游龙。
Description: This dance originally depicts the beautiful ladies in the Eastern Han capital, Luoyang. The dance highlights the exquisiteness of feminine beauty as well as expresses the grandeur of the imperial capital. In our dance drama, the dance represents the glory of the Tang capital, Changan, in Li Bai’s Li Bai’s memory of his earlier years.
Second day of our dance description, we have the most depressing dance of the show.
Dance name: Prison
舞蹈名称：狱中 “Floating clouds eventually the sun conceals,
Being so far away from Changan has me worried in shadow.”
——Li Bai “Atop the Phoenix Lookout of Jinling” “总为浮云能蔽日，长安不见使人愁。”
Description: Out of Li Bai’s expectation, his master, Lord Yong later attempted to seize the throne from his brother (the emperor) and failed. Li Bai, as a key advisor of the Lord, was imprisoned. First sentenced to death, Li Bai was saved by General Guo, and instead sent to exile. Li Bai suffered, and this dance expresses his grief, yet unyielding spirit while being imprisoned.
Hi everybody! For those interested in dance drama LI Bai, here are our dance descriptions! Starting from today, we will introduce twelve main dances of our show, one each day. For each dance, we will also include a line from a related poem. Good chance to learn some Chinese poetry!
Dance Name: Army
舞蹈名称：从军 “Turmoil sweep, along with the vandals from the North,
South fled the people, just as they’ve done during the Yong Jia Invasion.”
——Li Bai “Song of Lord Yong’s Eastward Expedition” “三川北虏乱如麻，
Army: In Li Bai’s later years, a civil war was being fought between the An Shi rebellion force and the Tang dynasty central government. With aspiration to contribute to his country, Li Bai became an advisor of Lord Yong, the brother of the emperor. He wrote “Songs of Lord Yong’s Eastward Expedition” praising the Lord’s achievements while expressing his own vision to restore peace and prosperity to the country.
