Danke an @michelle_leiss_photography
für das tolle Shooting im Sommer
You guys know the whole reason the #WhimsiGals did #ENCHANTEDBYGCL is because we love her story-weaving talent so dang much. This loose re-telling of Snow White is one of the many reasons why @Gailcarsonlevine became one of my favorite authors as a middle-schooler, and it is also a great candidate for the topic of #innerbeauty.
In #FAIREST, Aza is definitely not the fairest of them all. She is often mocked and made fun of because of her looks, and she shies away from others as a result. However, she is kind and pure of heart, and has a dazzling singing voice that gains her special attention not only from the prince, but from the vain and dangerous queen as well. Over the course of the story, Aza is swept up in the skirts of adventure as she navigates the path to learning just how worthy and wonderful she is.
As a young reader, I related HAAARD to Aza's story. It wasn't even just that we both liked to sing; I was always bigger than my friends, and being "skinny" equated beauty to me. I also struggled with bad skin (still do), and felt like I'd been hit with both sides of the ugly stick. It was years into my own journey of self-discovery before I REALLY figured out that outer beauty wasn't what mattered -- that some of the girls I envied at school because of how doe-eyed and waify they were had about as much personality as the dull side of a coin, and that many of them were selfish and shallow and had more fluff in their heads than a cotton mill. Why did I want to be like them when I had more uniqueness in my little finger than they would ever have in their lives?! 🤔 Aza comes into her own the same way, and I appreciated that story being told. How often back in the early 00s did we get MCs who weren't thin, if not also gorgeous?! I loved having an MC who got the prince in the end because of how awesome she was on the inside, despite no resemblance to a runway model. GCL was totally ahead of the curve on this!
