I’ve been listening to a number of podcasts recently on the subject matter of ‘happiness’ and what it truly means to be happy and how do we nurture and cultivate that emotion.
There is a fascinating link between love, family, social connectedness and relationships and a longer lifespan. After all, owning an amazing body and an intelligent and sharp mind can all be for naught if loneliness, sadness, inflammation, high blood pressure and accelerated ageing are all occurring due to a lack of friendships, social relationships, community, charity and love.
Scientific research is showing that the reason we’re not finding true happiness in our lives is because we’re becoming more disconnected and more isolated (lonely) than ever before. Some health experts are even calling loneliness a hidden health epidemic. A study on social isolation in America by Miller McPherson and his team, between the years of 1985 and 2004, found that the number of people saying there is no one with whom they discuss important matters nearly tripled.
Loneliness or ‘social isolation’ negatively affects your physical and mental health in many ways, and as many of us have already experienced there is a strong correlation between loneliness and increased use of social media (lack of face to face interaction). Thus our ability to develop meaningful and personal relationships has been lost.
So what can we do to build the connections science has shown to be so vital to our long term health and happiness? How about incorporating some of these practical things into your life:
❤️ Give affection and love to others, rather than just receiving it.
❤️ Expressing gratitude increases your empathy toward others.
❤️ Altruism: helping others who are stressed helps with your own stress levels.
❤️ Don't be kind, help others etc. because you think it's going to improve your health; do it because you want to do it.
That friend you’ve been meaning to call or see for ages? Go and call them. That family member you’ve been ignoring for too long? Re-connect with them. Don’t know who your neighbours are? Go and introduce yourself.
Be more HUMAN. #fightloneliness 🥰
