The impression we had while visiting Helsinki is of a modern and contemporary city. Unlike most of the other European capitals, Helsinki doesn’t have a defined cityscape. The Finnish Capital rather has a series of architectural buildings that stand on their own or within particular areas. This is what makes Helsinki so unique.
Perhaps the imposing Helsinki Cathedral represents one of the few landmarks that we could consistently identify during our time in the city. We were able to spot the white facades and the neoclassical green domes of the Cathedral from Suomenlinna and from many other locations too while in Helsinki.
Helsinki completely captured our hearts. Every corner is full of surprises and we felt at home. There is so much to do and see. It looks like the city doesn’t want to show off and kind of tries to hide its treasures. We always had the feeling that things in Helsinki are functional over beautiful, made for the people who actually live the city, not for tourists.
That’s why we love Helsinki so much! ⠀
It’s amazing how many people know what God does and why.
Helsinki Cathedral is located in the centre of Helsinki, Finland. The church was originally built from 1830-1852 as a tribute to the Grand Duke of Finland, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia.
A distinctive landmark in the Helsinki cityscape, with its tall, green dome surrounded by four smaller domes, the building is in the neoclassical style. It was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel as the climax of his Senate Square layout: it is surrounded by other, smaller buildings designed by him.
The church's plan is a Greek cross (a square centre and four equilateral arms), symmetrical in each of the four cardinal directions, with each arm's façade featuring a colonnade and pediment.
