You instead rely on Wikipedia and write travel guides to a city you visit once. You feel that by not having a guide, you are true to yourself and explore freely, yet I watch feed after feed with the same coffee shops, same gelato shops, same pizza places - and they are all on the very beaten path. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Not all countries have guides, those with an exceptionally rich and long history do, Italy alone houses 40% of the UNESCO world heritage list. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A licensed tour guide isn’t some old, musty and tweed clad drawled boring you out of your mind; it’s also people like us; the young (well..) and the passionate and the ones who tell you the gossip of the behind the scenes of the lives of artists, who they are, whom they hated and why. You come to Italy and yes it’s pretty and yes the pretty colors and oh the food, but do you leave knowing WHY the Renaissance was such a game changer? Why the David stands in the direction he does? What Botticelli did on the walls of the Sistine chapel and what did Michelangelo do to Adam? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But my biggest fear is also that no one cares anymore, except the older crowds. But what happens when they go? Will we, as well? How much cultural and archeological and historical knowledge will be lost, because all that mattered was the photo and the ✅ of the bucket list; to see but not understand? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thoughts?

One of my favourite corners in downtown Rome just off to Campo dei Fiori is Piazza del Biscione. Here most of the palaces are built on the ruins of the theatre built by Pompey in 55 BC but I like especially this building that features some of the original paintings and a "Madonnella", a small image of the Vergin Mary put up there to protect people. Some of the beautiful Torah covers exhibited in the Jewish Museum of Rome. During the ghetto times Jews could only lend money and sell second hand rags. The Jewish women became the most experienced seamstresses in town who would work for the aristocratic ladies, making dresses. Once the ladies were tired of the old dress and wanted a new dress, the Jewish seamstresses would convert the dress into a Torah cover.
