Started 90s Bitch a few days ago and loving it! As a child and teen of the 90s, it's amazing how familiar the media and pop culture references are but also how much I was unaware of at the time. That could be for a number of reasons, whether it was being too young, something not being on my radar, lack of interest in the show, movie, music, or news story, or not having access to it at all. In some cases, I had a vague awareness of how certain women were treated, but the news and media took things way further than I realized. It's definitely made me reflect on my feelings at the time and changed my views on certain women, shows, and music. And that's with only having listened to about two-thirds of the book. I'm very much looking forward to the rest!

I got to see my main man at cal poly SLO tonight. I tried to get a pic with him but he was mobbed! I originally heard him via youtube with bell hooks maybe 6 months ago feeling so convicted and encouraged by everything he was saying and the voices he was introducing me to. I dug deeper and of course, in his book on philosophy he starts with 4 chapters on my other main man, Emerson. I don’t know how people view Cornel West, it seems he’s obscure enough that people critique a sound byte of his, but those critiquing him don’t realize he has addressed their critiques and simply doesn’t have the time (and they don’t seem to have the interest) to explain every facet of his thinking. Since he is a leftist most usually criticize a lack of personal responsibility, but he, like Gramsci, seems to hold both personal responsibility and structural critique hand in hand. West’s liberation theology seems to confuse the liberal who is pro-secular and the conservative who thinks Christianity is under attack from the left...yet as I study and live more and more I see liberation theology making deep historical sense, literary sense, philosophical sense, spiritual sense...and leftists are (surprising to many conservatives and liberals) increasingly pro-christian—Not the Christianity that excludes others and buttresses an unaccountable empire of drone warfare and Wall Street, (much like the pharisaism that buttressed an unaccountable Roman Empire, working together in killing Jesus) but a Christianity that stands up for the (lesbian?) woman caught in adultery, and the Good Samaritan (Muslim?), the kingdom of heaven belonging to the poor in spirit, the day of justice coming for the *nation* (look it up, Matt 25) that doesn’t help the hungry, the sick, the orphan, the widow. It strikes me that when a liberal listens to others they tend to become leftists, similarly, when a conservative listens to others they begin sharing more and more leftist ideas, though because they have been taught to equate the left with totalitarianism, they would never use the term. Cornel makes me think a better world is possible, though as he said tonight, nothing is guaranteed.

How do you show up for yourself?? 🧘♀️ Is it yoga or exercise, meditation, mindfulness, self-compassion, forgiveness, feeding your body with nourishing food, avoiding negative vibes/people, drinking enough water, getting up on time, reading a book, journaling, or just taking a break when you need it? •
Maybe you can only start implementing one of those things right now to start taking better care of YOU, but it’s a start 🥰
Book Number 3 in the 2019 Goodreads Reading Challenge is: “Tibetan Peach Pie: A True Account of an Imaginative Life” by Tom Robbins
I’m going to start off by saying that I was largely unaware of Tom Robbins work prior to this audiobook other than the movie, “Even Cowgirls Get The Blues,” which was adapted from his novel by the same title. That said, this book had me laughing out loud a good deal. I found Mr. Robbins’ writing delightful, so much so that this is a book I will by buying for my home library.
The stories he shares from growing up to present day and everything in between had me identifying frequently with his mischievous nature, zest for life, and lengthy, meandering style of writing. Plus, given that “Even Cowgirls Get The Blues” is a movie I remember (it IS memorable), I have a feeling the book is even better. I also enjoyed that he writes a lot about a variety of his other novels, which made me want to read them. That’s some good marketing!
Now, before *I* get too wordy with my review, I’ll leave you with a quote from the book… “Evidently, I'd suffered an epiphany: the subconscious realization that when it comes to coolness, nothing the human race has ever invented is more cool than a book.” ― Tom Robbins, Tibetan Peach Pie: A True Account of an Imaginative Life

📚 5-2019. Inginku 13, tapi malah 5.
Agar pelan-pelan kumemahami😅
Kumenikmati kisah Prima, lalu teringat kupunya teman bernama Integral.

Last night my husband and I had the opportunity to step away from the house for a few hours. The first chance to do so since his father died. It was some much needed time alone together, even if it was just for a short time. We went to get a drink (him whiskey on the rocks, me an amaretto sour) and then we went to Barnes & Noble - the place of our first meeting. We had a Christmas gift card to spend, so we each got ourselves a few books. If you saw my stories last night you know I was trying to choose between Tangerine and The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. Well, I couldn’t make up my mind, so I just got both 🙈. And earlier this year someone recommended The Possible World to me as a book they thought I’d love. If that was you, thank you, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. Tell me - which of these should I read first??
