Ok, since today is relatively quiet, and I haven’t really spoken yet on the Packers and Khalil Mack, allow me to provide my opinion on whether or not we will trade for him, and why I think what I think.
I’m going to be completely honest, I don’t think Green Bay will trade for Khalil Mack, and here’s why: Gutekunst is not going to mortgage the future for the present. Everyone knew that Gute would be more like TT than Wolf, and he values the future a lot, so why would he trade two first round picks that could be used to land a younger, much cheaper star? Simple answer, they wouldn’t. Green Bay has a ton of flexibility with the two picks, and by getting New Orleans’ pick, they gain the ability to easily package those two picks for a top 10 pick in next year’s draft, which they could use to land a future star that could last past Rodgers and their current window. Trading both of those picks leaves you with a late second round pick at best for next season, and we have too many open roster spots to sacrifice those picks for one player. No matter how great that player is. Would it make the Packers immediate Super Bowl contenders? Yes. Would we be betting a lot on the fact that our current players are good enough? Such as our young secondary or shaky receiver position? Also yes. The Packers have to weigh if they are really just one piece away, because having Mack last season didn’t make the Raiders one of the best defenses immediately, and that’s because they don’t have the overall roster. Green Bay has a similar issue, and I don’t think personally it is worth the massive risk and price, both contract and trade wise. Don’t get too excited on this speculation, remember how OBJ was going to be traded back in March? A lot of times, the issues are hammered out, and a lot of times, the media wants to create a story that they can write about. I would still be ecstatic if we did trade for Mack though.
What are your thoughts on the Khalil Mack rumors?
