SURGERY UPDATE: SIX MONTHS.. (and one week) The last 6 months have flown by so quickly! I’m still trying to come to terms with my forced retirement from hockey, having played for the better part of the last 20 years. I’m also still struggling to accept that I’m not anywhere near 100% and ready to run and do whatever I want. Sometimes, recovery timeframes don’t end up being the exact timeframes for yourself. I struggle with long periods of sitting, and I still can’t extend my hip past neutral. I can’t sit on the floor with my legs crossed, or sit on my heels. My shins still feel numb and they ache like crazy if I walk around in bare feet for more than 30 minutes. When you’re told that at 6 months you’ll be able to return to sport, it becomes very frustrating when you hit that milestone and are far from playing sport. My hip feels it’s currently at about 60% and my calves feel about 40%. I can skate. Shoulder position during kettlebell swing by @moveu_official . . The kettlebell swing is an incredible hamstring, glute, core, and cardio exercise. 🔥 In this video, we aren’t talking about the actual hip hinge portion of the exercise. Although it is probably the most important part of the movement, we have covered that in numerous hip hinge videos in the past. This video instead focuses on the shoulder positioning during the kettlebell swing(KBS). Why? When your blades are properly engaged in a KBS, deadlift, squat, olympic lift, or any other movement, it helps to create tension through the entire torso and produce more power. A KBS, deadlift, and squat all use the lever system to move weight as efficiently as possible. If your shoulders are rounded forward and deactivated, you will lose tension in the upper body, produce less force in the movement, and put more stress on the LOWER BACK. If you often feel some pain in the lower back, it could be due to your lack of shoulder blade engagement! Imagine that your body is a catapult that launches rocks and if the arm of that catapult (your entire torso) has a weak, bendy spot, it will not launch the rock nearly as far as it would if the arm of the catapult (your torso) was completely rigid. Maintaining an aligned core and engaged shoulder blades will create rigidity of the torso and allow you to more heavier weight more efficiently. You do not need to “reset” your blades for every rep like we show in the video. That is a good visual for you to know whether or not your blades are properly set. New client with "rib pain" when he does seated rows. It's been bothering him for some months, but he still does the exercise. He pointed to an area between his shoulder blades, and after poking around I found the exact spot near his middle/upper thoracic spine. NKT testing showed overworking middle traps and underworking lats. In a rowing exercise these 2 muscles work together to retract the scapula. When one becomes neurologically under active the other can become over active. Released the mid trap and activated the lat. No more "rib" pain. Challenged it by doing seated rows with a band, still no pain. My client came in complaining of lower back pain that no one was able to identify. He said it was near the hip and spine. That made me think of the iliolumbar ligament, that connects the ilium to L4 and L5, and is fascially connected to the QL (quadratus lumborum). NKT testing revealed an over active QL and iliolumbar ligament with an under active psoas. He'd been hauling a lot of junk out of his garage when this started. Released the QL, neurologically deactivated the iliolumbar ligament, and then activated the psoas. His back felt almost like new, so he was encouraged to do his homework. Cupping! Have you seen the newest, oldest craze? Cupping has been around since ancient times in Chinese medicine, and like many things lately, has made a comeback in modern medicine and healing. When I saw @m_phelps00 sporting the perfect circular bruises in the olympics it reminded me of my first glimpse of @kttape on @kerrileewalsh and how I was inspired to learn the tape as a modality to augment treatment. So I took an interest in cupping, as I did #kttape, to have as another tool for my patients and athletes. ▪️One of my favorite aspects of this type of myofascial release is that it applies negative pressure to the tissue. Other release techniques that we do such as manual therapy and #iastm or #graston, all provide positive pressure to the tissue, when sometimes as practitioners we can sense that the tissue just wants to be lifted vs pressed on (think IT band insertion, lateral epicondyle). I have found great results with a specific technique called Tissue Distraction Release with Movement, versus the normal static cupping that leaves the perfect bruise circles. This technique (seen in video above) lifts the top layers of tissue while the patient activates the relevant tissue underneath the cup. The movement of tissue while the cup is providing a force on the top layer may further assist the release of fascial entrapments in the tissue. I also like to take the cup and glide it along the length of the tight tissue. This athlete had no marks at the end of treatment. ▪️This athlete is a seasoned #trailrunner, #ultramarathoner. She had a trail race where she put in a lot of speed in her down hills. Her knee felt crunchy afterward. She was most tender on the patella and proximal quad tendon with tightness that could be felt in these regions. I had her bring on her discomfort with a yoga pose she was avoiding in deep knee flexion. We did the cupping with muscle contraction and gliding the cups, and she did the yoga pose again now without discomfort. She was also given strength and flexibility exercises to improve mechanics overall for hills. PTs will use a modality such as cupping to improve the tissue and symptom and an exercise 💪to help it maintain the gains

Taken three weeks ago, at Intercare Alabang. Apparently I had shoulder bursitis and impingement, which I probably got from keeping on working out, playing basketball and golf despite feeling pain already. One more week of physical therapy, myotherapy and IASTM then hopefully I'll be good to go. The most important lesson I got from the therapists is to STRETCH A LOT before and after any physical activity, to loosen muscles and get them ready. Plyometrics ——- Plyos are a must for lower extremity injuries. It can be used to assess strength and neuromuscular control. These exercises can vary in difficulty which can be used to assess either strength , neuromuscular control or both. All the ones in this post are for neuromuscular control and I’ve posted some showing compensations as well. It should also be considered when dealing with shoulder and neck pain. —— ✌🏻The two primary motions I tend to focus on improving here are extension and rotation. —— 1️⃣The first drill is designed to actively improve your thoracic rotation. Make sure to sit back on this one (the slight lumbar flexion helps isolate the motion to the thoracic spine). —- 2️⃣The second movement is using a band to maximize the amount of extension you are able to get from this more traditional mobility drill. —- 3️⃣The last drill focuses on full extension and rotations motions.
