I grew up near Boston but have never been involved in the local horticulture scene here. Yesterday my sis & I had the distinct honor of wandering around the Mass Hort Society’s Elm Bank Garden with two local horticultural phenoms, @lucassusanne & Julie McIntosh Shapiro. The land was first developed as a property in the 17th century, then named Elm Bank in 1740 when elm trees were planted on the property, along the banks of the Charles River. In 1907, new gardens were designed and some existing areas renovated by the Olmsted Bros firm. Today, the property is owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the gardens are run by the Mass Horticultural Society. There is also a fun Proven Winners test garden there. #olmsted#olmstedbrothers#masshort#landscapedesign#gardendesign#provenwinners#acer#helianthus#canna#zinnia#dahlia#coleus#ceropegia

today, visiting the home, studios, and works of Frederick Law Olmsted in Brookline/Boston. He wrote: “In a park, the largest provision is required for the human presence. Men must come together, and must be seen coming together, in carriages, on horseback and on foot; and the concourse of animated life which will thus be formed, must in itself be made, if possible, an attractive and diverting spectacle.” #olmsted#boston#landscapearchitecture#urbanism#fens

From the Jackie Onassis Reservoir, Central Park, NYC.
Stunning views on the Upper East Side and Midtown skylines.
Difficile de voir un panorama urbain plus époustouflant. Même depuis les parcs de Tokyo, vallonnés, on ne ressent pas cet effet d'horizon et de lointain, d'échelles et d'espace.

LAF’s Olmsted Scholars Program recognizes and supports students with exceptional leadership potential who are using ideas, influence, communication, service, and leadership to advance sustainable design and foster human and societal benefits.
“The ideas, projects, and commitments are so powerful. These young designers are opening up the dialogue on current issues that this generation and the landscape architecture profession will need to address.”

So fired up! @olmstedchamblee took away the “ULI” for Excellence in Housing last night given by ULI Atlanta. Congrats to the whole team for all the blood, sweat, and tears to make this project such a success. Who would have thought?!? #chamblee#olmsted#iamcf

In Olmsted, the focus is on sustainability and maximizing the use of ingredientes. Went there for brunch and dishes were simply amazing 👏🏻 And a great great service, like few (we even ended doing mezcal shots 😍) 📷: Homemade Egg Rolls with homemade bacon, Summer Squash Bread, Gravlax, Carrot Kathi Roll and Falafel 🥕 —————————————————

Our home in 1922 when Walter Magee (Pittsburgh steel money) and his partner Platt Hubbard (American Impressionist) purchased the house, and at the beginning of their transformation from barren farmland into formal gardens with Olmsted Brothers. The @florencegriswoldmuseum holds an archive of hundreds of photos that Walter and Platt took themselves in every season of every year for about 30 years as the garden was planted and the interior restored. It's the best gift a historic homeowner can receive and we're beginning the process of writing a book about this special place. Look forward to showing you all more photos. Thank you Walter and Platt. You would have loved to see your garden today🙏🏻 #colonial#architecture#history#connecticut#olmsted#florencegriswoldmuseum
“Gradually and silently the charm comes over us; we know not exactly where or how.” —Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of #landscapearchitecture
As a landscape architecture grad student, and as an #olmstedscholar, it was pretty exciting to finally visit Olmsted’s classic, pastoral #CentralPark. I definitely geeked out and was genuinely shocked when no one else in my travel group knew who Omsted was. 😦 LOL. 🌳 I’m on vacay but welcome to class, kids... 👩🏻🏫
Starting with Central Park, Olmsted’s principles have shaped the American landscape more than anyone else. His influence is undeniable. As a designer for countless landscapes, including some of the world’s most iconic parks and places, Olmsted was driven by his passion to benefit people with his work. He believed in and acted upon the principle that regardless of social or economic status, everyone deserves access to green spaces for their physical and mental health. Great public spaces are accessible places of harmony, with room for diversity of people and activities. #democraticdesign •
Olmsted’s purpose was not necessarily to make people see his work or focus on parts, but for people to E X P E R I E N C E the place as a whole, and physically + subconsciously benefit from it. This is one of the driving purposes of landscape architecture. What are your favorite outdoor spaces to visit for relaxation? #thisislandscapearchitecture#iconic#parks#peopleandplaces
