Preparing for my next shoot, Frost Fair on the River Thames. My darling Finn trying on some of the wardrobe I’ve been collecting over the years for shoots... thinking of having him on set! Era 1814 #frostfair#oldfatherthames#thamesfrostfair
I’ve been doing some long winter Thames walks recently when not #mudlarking and this one was a particular favourite. From the tip of the Isle of Dogs at Island Gardens, follow the signs to Burrells Wharf where you can still see the ill-fated launch site of Brunel’s SS Great Eastern, past what’s left of Millwall Docks, West India Pier and then onto Canary Wharf by which time I was so hungry I could have eaten a horse.
There are so many great Thames Path walks so put on some comfy shoes & get walking!
NB I’m trying to walk as many of these routes as I can but have been disappointed to find so many of them coming to a dead end because private developers have blocked them off when they built new, & often luxury, developments.
You then have to do an unnecessary and sometimes lengthy detour around these private buildings and this makes me very cross.
The legal situation is quite clear; the Thames Pathway routes are a public right of way therefore we the public have the right to walk them in law. It’s shocking that private developers have been allowed to flout this right for their own personal gain.
*steps off soapbox* *stops ranting* 😂
Hi!!! This is @julia_fullertonbatten on the final Instagram takeover.... I’ve been working on a project recreating historical stories along the River Thames over the last two years. Here is a small example of some of the images, which are heavily cropped ... you can see more of the images and their stories on my website. Project Title: ‘Old Father Thames’ www.juliafullerton-batten.com.... see ya!! @mc2gallery#oldfatherthames#riverthames
I have always admired the Ophelia painting by #johneverettmillais and was very excited to discover the exact area the background was painted... even more excited to be able to include it as my Old Father Thames Project which I have been working on over the last two years. Hogsmill River is a tributary River to the River Thames. A 30x 40” print will be on display as part of the art fair #Ophelia#shakespeare#oldfatherthames#mc2gallery
If only nature could always ease the view of ugly architecture. Luxury living by the Thames. London sorely needs houses but it doesn’t need anymore like these: empty, weekend/holiday, tax dodges, unsellable, unlived in... unaffordable, especially when there’s so much homelessness visible and invisible. Beautiful tree, beautiful light... this old river has seen it all as it rolls by to the sea #oldfatherthames#planetree#eyesore#liftthespirit

Last week I was asked to pop into BBC Radio London to chat live on the Jo Good Show for 16 minutes about ‘The Old Father Thames’ Project... my super talented assistant @iamirissanne brought it alive by adding the images from the project and some behind the scenes filming by @genevieve.stevenson ... the full interview is on my website.... #oldfatherthames@middleagedminx
Behind the scenes of creating the image ‘Swan Uppers’. I was super excited to discover the traditional outfits that swan uppers wore were so much like @jpgaultierofficial love their striped outfits and their sailor looking caps.... on this image it looks all calm but this is the only time we got caught by the tide! I was shooting some variations on the swan but the water came in and we had to break the flash down super fast! Photo credit @genevieve.stevenson#swanupping#oldfatherthames#riverthames
Another behind the scenes image of the Grain Tower... I was hoping for a grey bleak day but the sun was out all day. In the end we made it work by letting the flash override the ambient, smoke and flaring the lens. It took us forever to hose down all the stands and lights from all the mud. The collection of waders and wellington boots are so many I could open a shop! #graintower#oldfatherthames#riverthames#estuary
Behind the scenes creating the Baptism scene in the original spot where baptisms used to take place. Luckily for us this part of the River Thames is non tidal.... we had to wade through the deep water with the flash lights and laptop as well as a Hasselblad H6D-100c... weeks of preparation and location search was essential for this shot! #cricklade#Wiltshire#oldfatherthames@hasselblad
