Our family has been re-inoculated. Stay with me . . . .
Our crazy, blended family took a trip together down to the Yucatan Peninsula. Nine of us . . . through security, customs, and all the craziness that encompasses such a feat. Here we are on an evening we were able to convince them to wear something other than swim-wear. . When I was a director of youth programs a few decades ago, I would jokingly tell parents that I promised to bring back +/- 10% of our total number. Prior to our departure, I promised Heather the same. She didn't laugh. .
Today is post-trip daze - a combination of re-living the memories we created, not wanting to let the trip go, and slowly ramping back up to life's "battle rhythm". And it's hard. The "day after" becomes more and more difficult to bear as bonds become stronger over time - a sure sign of correct priorities, and the perfect investment of seconds.
We have all been re-inoculated. .
When I am battling a cold, I look for medicine to clear my sinuses. Certainly, my body has its own immune system and can battle the infection itself, but we have medicine that can support recovery and wellness. My family is my life-wellness medicine - my inoculation. This has become more and more clear to me as I have gotten older, and as I have listened to the clients I have served.
Life consists of a series of celebrations and crises. In the midst of both, who do we turn to for celebration and support (medicine)? Certainly, friends. But my friends know me peripherally; my family knows me intuitively - built purposefully through opportunities to re-center. Family dinners, short and long vacations, Bob Ross painting classes, minor league baseball games . . . just flimsy excuses to bring one or all members of this motley crew together.
On my own, I might survive. With these beautiful people in my life, I thrive. They are my medicine.
It's been a while since I've posted about being conscious. This is just a bit about how I check what I eat.
Eggs are a huge part of my diet, so I always want to make sure that I'm not stuffing my body with colourants and preservatives.
Now this is usually tricky to look out for, because no store is going to tell you what's wrong with their food.
My habit is that I search for scandals. Check out the history and decide whether or not I trust the brand.
I'd love to always support small, local farm stalls, but when I'm moving around, I can't always search for the local farm stall.
I generally trust Woolworths when I'm in a rush.
Did you know that Woolworths is the only local retail store in South Africa to only stock free range eggs?
Their chickens are fed a vegetarian diet of grains and pulses that contain no artificial colourants, so their eggs yolk colour varies. They also respect the five freedoms of animals on their farms.
It's as ethical as it gets when you're on the move.
If you can support a local ethical farmer, go for it, but if that's not an option for you, this is my personal second choice.
P.S. don't forget to compost or recycle the carton the eggs come in!
That's how we can make a difference.
Sadly many are controlled by their past experiences. They cannot seem to let go of a painful & traumatic yesterday. They live with anger, troubled, depressed, frustrated & many even completely isolated. They are easily susceptible to heart attacks & eating disorders. Tho hard, it should be confronted for your own internal peace. It is a shame to live a life of emotional pain & not doing anything about it. They are missing out on opportunities that will not return. Seek help, talk, cry, write but don't let your past kill you & believe it or not, kill those that truly love you.
This is the first thing I see when I wake up and eat breakfast each morning. I do this not because it’s cute. I do this because I want to remind myself to make a decision to be great each day! Put things around you that give you jet fuel each day, and never allow yourself to get lethargic or live without purpose! Let’s roll!
Jake slicing peppers (while tasting them, good man, just like his dad!) and helping me with recipe testing for @merchantgourmet & @englandhockey recipes with fantastic nutritional advice from @bex_townsend_nutrition . It's an interesting mix as he is learning a technique that involves body position and follow through as a cricket or hockey shot does, while learning how to cook and eat to prepare himself and recover from sport. I am so incredibly lucky. I love being a dad, I love my work. Thanks Clive, thanks Nyree.
The more you wait, the longer it takes for you to get what you want.
Want something a little more scary?
If you don't do the work now, somebody out there who is hungrier than you will take that thing you want. What's scarier about this is if that person is less advantaged than you.
You have all the resources in your hand and all the time you got, but that somebody is beating you on everything with less than what you have.
Regret will creep up to you in many ways than you can imagine. Don't let that happen to you. Just do it now!

A white stork foraging on a landfill covered in plastic. Hundreds of thousands of birds die from swallowing plastic every year.
While recycling seemed to be a good solution to prevent this problem, plastic recycling initiatives are doing little for the environment as cheap low-grade single-use plastics are simply not suitable for recycling.
There is international concern about the increasing use of plastic and pollution, particularly in the water chain. By 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans.
Let 2019 be the year we join forces and really ban single-use plastics out of our lives.
I survived Christmas, hallelujah! 🥂
Now I am shifting focus to 2019. I spent today reflecting on my goals for the new year and wanted to share them with you! 📆
They are inspired by some of my favourite instagram accounts, link in bio. 📌
