Thanks to everyone who has set up a birthday fundraiser or a general fundraiser on our Facebook page. This is a great new way of supporting the hospice and the money comes directly to us.
Your friends and family can track donations and can see your total growing with each donation. Every penny is greatly appreciated by everyone at Martin House. We can also send you a certificate and thank you letter if you would like one - just let us know!
GIFTS 》 I am so sorry to be the toad who brings the C word into your feed in March but I couldn't write about money without telling you how my family approach gift giving.
8 years ago we decided to have a present-free Christmas. Everyone is a grown up who buys what they want, when they want it. We'd ended up giving each other vouchers along with random bits of tat that nobody actually needed. Everyone agreed they hated shopping and they hated wrapping so it was decided we'd skip gifts one year.
That morning we went sledging and walked the dogs before a yummy lunch and we didn't feel like anything was missing at all. We have never looked back and now extended this to birthdays too, bar big ones where we go all out. One sister lives in Australia and the other lives in Abu Dhabi so long distance giving is a major faff, though we make an exception for the kids.
Don't get me wrong, I love gifting, I love my family, and I've received some wonderful presents so my position doesn't come from a lack of gratitude. We just felt it had become a crazy pressure on us all, and the best gift we could give each other was the chance to duck out all together.
Every time I mention this people say they'd love to do it but their family wouldn't. Yet it's easy to spend hundreds of pounds on unnecessary stuff in the pursuit of one perfect day.
If you want to go gift-free or reduce spending I recommend having the conversation as early as possible before that really organised family member starts buying. Here a few ways you could approach the discussion: 🌲Suggest you try it for just one year
🌲Put the money towards the food, a fancy meal out, or a weekend away
🌲Set a strict budget - bear in mind there's always one who goes overboard
🌲Handmade Christmas - this is quite a bit of extra time pressure but can be more affordable
🌲Books for everyone!
🌲Donation to charity
How do your family approach present buying? I'd love to know what you think of Christmas without gifts.
Yea I been kinda busy. Manhoman had his birdday yesterday. The homans made poison cake with poison on it, and another plant moved in, and I did not get one single present. Shittiest birdday ever if u ask me! #birdday#shit#nopresents
Hey peeps, it’s my birthday Saturday and I’m already thinking about what I’m gonna eat and plan my calories for the week to allow this. My best mate @whataleats started his food insta page the same day as me and I have 2 more followers than him which is eating him up inside. This is one of his many pictures and he eats this stuff every weekend multiple times! He is still in decent shape and looks pretty good naked. How does he do this you may ask? well he implements intermittent fasting and strict calories during the week to allow for this. Give @whataleats a follow and help him get more followers and then I can over take him again tomorrow!
