You have a right
To live your life
Like no one else does
Like no one else might
If you have visions
Come on and live them out
All you need
Is some peace
While you are here
Just let go
Till you are home, dear 🖤
Earlier this week Hadley called me after I had just finished basketball practice with her brother and sister. My husband and I coach both of our older kids basketball teams. Hadley was a little bit upset and about ready to cry when she said “Mom when are you and dad going to coach me and help me play wheelchair basketball? I really want to play and I know I need to practice! “
I felt bad that we had not helped her learn how to play! It had been hard to wrap my head around her playing sometimes because we are so worried about protecting her that I knew teaching her basketball safely would take some real thought and effort. Ultimately despite my hesitation she has been determined to play and practice. My husband and I decided that we had to start doing something to help her.
Our first step was to watch a couple of videos on YouTube about wheelchair basketball. Hadley and I had a great time doing this. We learned a lot about the rules and how the game is played in wheelchairs. we decided to make up a workout routine to start her learning how to play. I was worried she would have a hard time handling the ball while she pushed herself, I was definitely wrong about that! She is very good at it!! She is not super-strong yet but she can pass really well. We tried a little bit of shooting but she can’t quite get it to the rim yet on our small hoop in the garage. It was fun to see her face light up with a beautiful smile when the ball finally hit the bottom of the net.
I was amazed at how well she did in her chair! I had no idea how much fun the sport really could be even in a wheelchair. We love basketball and it was so exciting to see her doing something that she had dreamed about doing for so long. We are excited to help her learn how to play and will be anxious to find a team for her to play on.
At some point I guess I should just stop being surprised at the amazing things Hadley can do. I might be coaching her in basketball, but she is coaching me in ways that she will never understand. I’m so thankful for her unbreakable spirit that inspires me to be a better person every day. Now let’s go play some hoops! :-)
