Jewelweed for hummingbirds

Impatiens capensis is an important late-season flower for hummingbirds during fall migration.
In my much-loved 1948 vintage wildflower book John Kieran explains the origin of the Latin impatiens meaning in effect impatient "because when the bean-shaped seed pods ripen, the slightest touch will cause them to explode with a quick spiraling motion that throws the seed some distance away. Show children how to pinch the tips of the seed pods and they will have a lot of fun." Doing just that was one of my favorite things to do in the woods behind my house when I was a young girl. 💖 📸 Helen Lowe Metzman.
We're all about recycling waste in to wonderful new creations and on his recent trip to Christmas Island Chris got the chance to meet these incredible school kids who are upcycling plastic waste, such as highlighters and bottle caps, in to artwork!
Native to South Africa, the bermuda buttercup (Oxalis pes-caprae) is increasingly occupying the agricultural areas of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park (Portugal), being especially evident during the winter months as its flowers blossom.
The eradication of this invasive species is problematic, requiring a lot of time and labour in order to uproot its bulbs and to avoid the use of harmful herbicides.

It’s commonly known that flowers that bloom at night are usually white and very fragrant. This is because most nocturnal blooms rely on pollination from moths, and sometimes bats. Butterflies and bees are generally active during the daytime, and are guided by colors and flashiness of flowers. Stripes (nectar guides), freckles, and neon colors decorate most flowers to get butterflies and bees landing in them. Moms, who pollinate night blooms, are guided by scent. The flowers have to smell strongly to get visitors (pheromones, anyone?) Color isn’t a huge attraction since it’s night time and moths have poor vision.
While researching these flowers, I noticed that every single one elongated stamens and a stigma sticking out super far. I couldn’t find any information on this trend. But, my logical guess is that moths usually hover over flowers to pollinate, unlike butterflies who land. They use their long proboscises (tongue) to drink from nectar tubes (like datura and cereus flowers). So, the flowers has developed anthers that protrude in order to have a better chance at transferring pollen. I think it’s super interesting and beautiful and I love discovering things like this through making art. Art always seemed like a better lens through which to view nature than science. Nature is so mysteriously perfect.
And now I have no room to write my profile on each flower. 🖖🏻
