Internal shoulder Rotation. . Pure shoulder mobility is a motion that is often lost. This can be due to postural habits ,strength or stability deficits and is often re-enforced by muscular compensation. . In this technique we are aiming to increase internal rotation of the shoulder. Many postures and general activities place us in internal rotation throughout the day,. If you look at someone with an upper crossed syndrome type posture they are in thoracic flexion scapula abduction and some degree of internal shoulder rotation. . 3 Keys to Performing the Assisted Sleeper Stretch Correctly . Scapula position. Make sure that your scapula is retracted and depressed . Shoulder position. Use hands and grip to Ensure all motion comes from shoulder rotation . Intensity. Lastly, you want to gently push down until you feel a MILD . Most people will push WAY to hard. You do not want to feel anything in the front of your shoulder. The goal is to feel a mild stretch in the back of your shoulder and to hold this position. Do this gently for a few reps and you will see improvement without motoring the arm aggressively. . Using this technique limits the compensation from thoracic flexion and scapular movement so is commonly found that people who are presenting with upper crossed syndrome still have limited shoulder internal rotation. . - L E V S C A P - Your Levator Scapulae is a muscle that lays just underneath your Upper Traps in the corner where your neck meets your shoulder . This muscle is a very busy little thing. It initiates and assists in a lot of your neck movements such as: 👉🏼Lateral Flexion (cute little head tilt) 👉🏼Extension 👉🏼Same side Rotation of the head and neck (and most importantly, the movement behind the name…) 👉🏼Scapula Elevation . The most common dysfunction to Lev Scap is postural stress and/or activity overload stresses. This can be things like holding the phone 📞 between your shoulder and ear can be a real killer for this bad boy. People will often complain of having a stiff neck, especially when rotating their head 😖 The production of 💥trigger points💥 in this muscle are very common and can be easily treated with anything from hands on manipulation to dry needling to myofascial release! 🙌🏼 . The fun thing (well, what I find fun about it anyway 🤓) is the structure of this muscle. Around the mid belly of it, the fibres actually TWIST! This is what helps with its ability to rotate the head and neck! ☺️ . Checking in 😀 It’s been a long time between posts and as I am feeling really good today I thought I might just log an update. I love setting goals, I find I achieve more when I have a goal in mind, my goals at the moment are 1. Injuries - how to avoid them, stop them and fix them. I find when I am injured or suffering with inflammation it really brings me down, I am learning focus on listening to my body and to understand when I have pushed it too far, I have found an amazing Myotherapist who is helping and guiding my through my exisiting conditions, I love exercising and can’t imagine a day when I don’t get up and train. I am also seeing a PT twice a week who is helping with getting my technique spot on, I have discovered that I tend to overuse the stronger muscles so we are doing a lot of isolation work. My 2nd goal is to loose some body fat, due to my body suffering with a lot of inflammation I have decided to try a low carb, low dairy diet along with increasing my vegetable and healthy fat intake. My current training is 2 days PT, 3 days F45 and two active recovery days. Taken three weeks ago, at Intercare Alabang. Apparently I had shoulder bursitis and impingement, which I probably got from keeping on working out, playing basketball and golf despite feeling pain already. One more week of physical therapy, myotherapy and IASTM then hopefully I'll be good to go. The most important lesson I got from the therapists is to STRETCH A LOT before and after any physical activity, to loosen muscles and get them ready. Our major player for neurological type TOS is the brachial plexus- this dude originates from the lower cervical spine nerves in your neck and then goes on to supply skin and muscles of the upper extremity. . The Scalene muscle group is made up of three portions- anterior, middle and posterior. The anterior and middle connect onto the first rib; help lift it and laterally flex the neck. Posterior connects to the second rib and does the same. . Guess where the brachial plexus exits? 👉🏻Right between that anterior and middle scalene. SO! It stands to reason if your scalene are tight they are likely elevating your first rib and shutting down this travel space. Let me tell you things that don't like to have their space invaded.
