5/13: Dare to trust strangers and the strange unknown. 🐶🌲
I shared a bit of this story when I made my initial post back in January 2018, but I find it remarkable enough that I want to share again.
I had it in my head that I was going to see ice caves during my trip. The only day I had free was my second to last day in the PNW - a Wednesday. I dropped @espadafish off at the Vancouver airport that morning and made my way back into Washington. I drove through intermittent rain into Mt. Baker - Snoqualmie National Forest to start my trek to the Big Four Ice Caves. The road was partially closed so the round trip hike quickly went from 3 miles to 8 miles... which didn’t deter me. Maybe it should have at nearly sunset, but I kept on, determined to see this site. About a mile into my hike a drenched girl and her dog approached me from ahead and asked if I was going to see the caves. When I said yes, they asked to join me. You can see a glimpse of them in the second to last photo. Holly was also 27 and her pup, Jax, was 4 months old. Both of them very sweet and daring in their quest, as (it seems) was I. We were an odd gang to be all alone in the Washington wilderness at dusk and although we never did catch a glimpse of these fabled ice caves (they were caved in 😿) we did have wonderful conversation and a remarkable journey in the rain, snow, and pitch black darkness. Sometimes it’s good to put your faith in strangers. You never know what good stories (or good photos) they will bring into your life. 📸🏔✨ #washingtonstate#pnw#mtbakerwilderness#wildernessculture#travelstories#travelwisdom#wandermore#explorepnw

Unfortunately, the North Cascades, and most of the west coast, are blanketed in a thick layer of smoke from wildfires in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. starting with this wonderful morning!! the day before, Jason and I had been hiking in Banff when the wild fire smoke got so thick, it started to affect our breathing. we made a last min decision to pack up, drive through the night, and wake up in Washington for sunrise.
with the help of Tim Hortons, caffeine pills and Joe Rogan, we made it with a few hours of sleep to spare. and this is was our morning... ❤️
