(Tbt) Throwback all the way to July 2004 when @simongregory and Tom Higson joined myself on an ill-prepared tour of the Mont Blanc Massif. Starting and ending in Chamonix we completed the route in three days taking in France, Switzerland and Italy. We experienced all kinds of weather and temperatures, mental battles, pain, tests of endurance and utter elation! We stayed in refuges around the route and travelled light with one small back pack of supplies each. I was on my steel @commencalbikes ‘Love’ and Tom on his bright red aluminium Specialized ‘rockhopper’. Both on V-Brakes, flat pedals, long stems and shit tyres. The Panaracer mega blaster being a particular case of ‘rolling the dice’. The only thing slightly ahead of its time was the chain guide on my bike. My brother being a bit older and working for longer had the means for an early full susser trail bike, the @rockymountainbicycles ets-x 30, equipped with disc brakes and @marzocchi_mtb Bombers...and some generous bb rise by the look of it. We thought they were all rad at the time and enjoyed every minute riding them. It is one of those trips that is forever seared in to the memory banks, tackled on a super low budget with as much hike-a-bike as riding and more punctures in a day than we now get in a year. A battle of endurance and character, guided by paper maps and with no phones in sight. Out in the wilderness, away from it all. A proper adventure by bike.
