Here’s a great shot for today’s #merlemonday post! Left: Isi - Catahoula Leopard Dog, Right: Tusk - Australian Shepherd. While both of these dogs carry the Merle gene and appear to have a similar phenotype (appearance), the breed standard often labels them differently! In #Catahoulas, they are referred to as Blue Leopards. In #Aussies, they’re referred to as Blue Merle’s. In #dauchshunds, the breed term is Dapple. The Merle genotype is often found in herding breeds, but is becoming a popular look in other breeds where is does not naturally occur, but has been selectively bred for by introducing a Merle carrying breed and breeding back out to the initial breed in order to create a purebred dog again. While Merle is a lovely color, it can be dangerous to breed a Merle dog to another Merle dog as each puppy will have a 25% chance of having blindness, deafness, or both.
*** Followup pictures *** We cannot express how much we ♥️ followup pics of this affectionate little Fawn Merle Female called “PUMPKIN” from our 2018 October Bogey & Nina litter. She is pictured at almost 4.5 months old & staying small & compact. 😍🐾♥️
