Ma Lu Bian Bian Hotpot (A Hot Pot) - Melbourne CBD
Malatang which means ‘spicy numbing hot’ soup - a style of shop where you choose your ingredients and you are charged based on weight has been an overnight sensation in Melbourne. So many of these restaurants have started to dot our maps.
Ma Lu Bian Bian Hot Pot is situated right next to the hugely popular Malatang chain Dragon Hot Pot on Russell Street. My friends and I found ourselves wanting some broth late night on a weeknight - and as we predicted the Dragon Hot Pot lines were out the door so we settled for Ma Lu Bian Bian and their offering of a pork bone broth - A great option to share with your friends or colleagues who may not be game enough to want the hot and numbing Malatang style soup (never fear Plenty of chili oil is provided here my spicy friends). The ingredients options for your soup are endless here. There’s fish, there’s prawns, there are scallops, all different kinds of mushrooms, Asian greens, fish balls (some with roe), beef balls all kinds of balls. Yes half these things are mega processed but Malatang is all about warming you up and giving you a giant soupy hug.
Our bowl came out - shared one between three. About 1kg of ingredients for $30, $10 each. It was MASSIVE. The broth - while it was light was a bit hit and miss for me. There were nice porky flavours to it but it just didn’t have the depth to really win me over. Once I added in a bit of chili oil it brought some tingles to the taste buds but nothing more really. Like the broth - the ingredients were also hit and miss. There were some exciting options like the bursting seafood balls which were filled with roe - identified by the yellow lines on the outside. The Bok Choy - always a favourite was a delightfully fresh contrast to many of the chewy tasteless meat balls. The sliced rare beef and lamb were great. I’d recommend these to fill out your bowls.
All in all a reasonable Malatang shop but I think Dragon Hot Pot still has by heart for this style!

I just did a naughty switch from my usual healthy green smoothie/juice to a cocktail! OOPS I just turned my healthy brunch into a boozy one.😜 @tinkernorthcote did not make it easy for me when all cocktails are $10 from 10am. But then again, I had my favourite salad; the detox salad with quinoa, kale, carrot and ginger dressing 🤤 and shared the Levantine chicken- grain herb salad, feta, pumpkin, pomegranate and halloumi 😍🤤😍🤤😍🤤😍🤤 Typing all this makes me want to go back for more now. Eeeeeek! #melbournerestaurant#cafeinmelbourne
What a delicious healthy breakfast I had. This bowl of goodness was full of strawberries, coconut, granola and other amazing food. This place is definitely a winner with its gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options! Woo hoo lol

Day 9 of veg month: Cooked up some spinach pakoras to go with some lefts overs! These taste lovely with a tomato chutney, especially if it was the one Ranjan Mami’s (auntie) made!

“Baboy + hipon” (pork + prawn) fried dimsim with @kristina.naray’s signature “sawsawan” (dipping sauce). The perfect pairing to this punchy and flavourful sawsawan. Five taste sensations in one dipping sauce. Sourness from the “kalamansi” (calamondin) + lime. Sweetness from the raw sugar. Saltiness and umami from the “patis” (fish sauce). And bitterness that you didn’t get to taste this for yourself 😜. The secret sauce to break all misconceptions that Filipino food is not fresh, not balanced, or just too salty. As our “kababayan” on @phlavorprofiles eloquently surmised: “Negative generalisations of Filipino food are usually a projection of one’s self”. The Entree.Pinays are here to change those misperceptions starting one Melburnian at a time. From our kitchens, to our city’s restaurants, to your bellies. Loud, proud, and “busog”. #EntreePinaysHOME

2x Southern fried chicken
Loose Mac & Cheese
Such a messy delight 🤤 this burger looked as good as it tasted, the beef was perfectly cooked with a slight bit of pink and very flavoursome, the fried chicken was tasty, crunchy and juicy, but the real MVP was the FT sauce and bacon jam, the FT sauce is so full of flavour and that bacon jam is next level good. Definitely drown you burger in these sauces and you won’t be disappointed.
