Stay tuned! Chris Walters and I are about to unleash our most complex puppet art film on to the world! As many of you know, I retired from iris farming/business last fall. I still have half my stock, so I employed the puppets to do a touchingly hilarious and surreal tribute to "la beaute" of "la fleur de lis". patreon.com/greghester
"Youths. Island of Naxos, Cyclades, Greece" by Herbert List, 1937. Magnum Photos. .
List (1903 - 1975) was a German photographer whose elegant and subtly erotic black-and-white images of young men has proved widely influential on contemporary fashion and fine art photography. Born in Hamburg, he initially entered his family's coffee business which allowed him to travel extensively; he first started taking pictures during these trips to South and Central America. Back in Hamburg he befriended the young photographer Andres Feininger who encouraged his growing interest in the medium. With the rise of Nazism his Jewish heritage and sexuality began to draw attention so he transferred the family business over to his brother in 1935 and relocated to Paris, where he worked for a number of publications, including Vogue, Life, and Harper's Bazaar. Unsatisfied with fashion photography, however, he increasingly focused on what he called "fotografia metafisica" (“metaphysical photography”). He relocated in Athens after the invasion of France, and then was forced to return to Germany after Greece was taken but was unable to work or publish due to his Jewishness; he was eventually drafted into the military, serving in Norway as a map designer. After the war he photographed the ruins of Munich and eventually settled there. He joined the photograph agency Magnum but took up assignments rarely, and began travelling extensively again. By 1965 he had given up photography to focus on his collection of Old Master drawings. He died in 1975 at the age of 72. In 1988 his book "Junge Männer" (1988) was posthumously published, and the 70 homoerotic images of young men is what he has become most remembered for. .
