Road signs in 2 languages and alphabets, Polish and Belarusian, clearly show you are in eastern Poland, in Podlasie region, most likely around city of Hajnowka. As per latest census, just 48 000 people in Poland identify themselves as Belarusian but the real figure is hard to estimate, some researchers mention even 180 000. In 4 counties of Podlaskie Voivodeship, Belarusians are in fact a majority, in several others over 20% of the local population. Social and culture relationships are not that difficult as with Russians or Ukrainians. Several organizations, folk bands, cultural societies develop quite well. Political relationships are a different story, since Poland is a member of EU, while Belarus maintains very close relationships with Russia, democracy there is also limited.
