🐪✨⛰We travelled 9hrs by suv through the Atlas mountains then caravanned by camel for 1.5hrs through the desert to arrive at our camp. We ate traditional tagine, drank domestic wine, and danced around a roaring fire while locals played the drums. After everyone went to bed, we adventured into the dunes to take in the immaculate night sky. What an otherworldly experience. P.s. Kinda want a pet camel.😍🐪 @destinationmorocco
Aït Ben Haddou fortified citadel is truly an amazing sight. This beautiful ancient city is one of the most famous filming spots in Morocco. It has been used as a backdrop in scenes from Gladiator, Babel, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven, Lawrence of Arabia, Alexander, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones. If Daenerys had arrived to the city first, I‘m sure all these movies would have had different plot twists!
When I first told people I was visiting Morocco, the most common piece of advice I would receive is not to trust people. I was also advised to not look men in the eyes and don’t believe anyone who tries to help you because they only want money.
Today was the perfect example of how very wrong these sweeping notions of Moroccan people truly are.
After helping me find my riad when I was utterly lost, my new friend Mustafa walked me around Morocco’s capital city Rabat for 7 hours straight! And before you ask... no- he never once asked me for a tip.
We had hours of discussions about Morocco’s rich culture and history as well as misconceptions about Islam. We laughed, ate delicious food, and got lost in the beautiful chaos that is Rabat.
Today I was reminded that the best moments come when you don’t allow fear to control your life. Had I listened to the fears of others, I would’ve missed out on an incredible day and lovely new friendship.
Neale Donald Walsch said it best... “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
