Biosecurity is defined as procedures intended to protect humans or animals against disease or harmful biological agents. You will notice that at our Spring Poultry and Homesteading Faire we have special procedures in place so that transmission of disease or other harmful agents is minimized.
Examples of how you can do your part to prevent against disease and harmful agent transmission: change your clothes before coming to our event. If you are wearing an outfit that you wore earlier around your own livestock or poultry there is a chance something from your animals can hitch a ride. Also sterilize any crates or kennels you bring from home to the event. Using the sanitation station upon entering and exiting the buildings are measures that helps keep people and animals safer from harmful transmissions.
Outside animals from non-vendors are also not allowed at our events. This means every animal, including pets from home. The only animals that are exempt from this are ADA service animals, and we are well aware of what questions we are legally allowed to ask to determine if your animal is an ADA service animal. Please leave pets at home!

James’s position contract farming means that he is responsible for any additional labour costs. So, both mum and I will be taking a turn in the lambing shed. Mum starts today for 3 weeks and l will be taking 6 days annual leave to help out later in April + weekends. .
James has set up the sheds differently this year, it’s his 3rd year lambing at Pitnacree and so it’s trial and error until he’s got things working how he’d like. The video shows the top shed with the singles (in the middle section) and triplets (either side). Last year James had the pens where the straw is, this year the pens fill the middle shed next to the feeding bay - much to mum and I’s relief = a lot less carrying heavy feed bags hopefully! The bottom shed has been split into two bigger pens and more singular pens. This shed also has an door opening into the field behind meaning ewes and lambs can be put out or in depending on weather conditions. .
This year we also have a lamb adopter, made by James’s brother in law @kevwilson90 which should make twinning on less stressful! .
On Saturday we split the Blackies into their lots and brought them down to fields closer to the farm steading for easier management, similar to the Cross Ewes the week before. .
We’ve our fingers crossed for what’s to come and we are excited to see this years progeny! ☀️🌱 .

I am always proud of all our kids, win or lose. But to say I am proud of how far this girl has come would be an understatement. I remember getting the call from her dad a few months ago and he told me that Millie had torn several ligaments and fractured her leg and probably wouldn’t be the one showing in the ring this season. I’ve watched her time and time again as someone else had to lead her steer into the ring even though it was her that put the hours and hours of work in at home. Today everything paid off. This was the first animal she has placed in the sale at a major, the first buckle and the first banner. @youngmills01 you deserve it as much as anyone! .

Oxtails with spring veggies! We are transitioning from winter to spring and this dish bridges that gap. I seared my @belcampomeatco oxtails in cast iron and then put them in my braising pot with a mess of spring onions and herbs. Covered with water and braised down for 4 hours and you have pull-apart oxtails to serve in the rich broth that the meat produces or pulled off the bone and served atop polenta, pasta or as a side. Oxtails are rich in connective tissue—LOTS of natural collagen—and have amazing flavor. Bonus: very affordable.

Sünna and some of the kits,
Her first time interacting with the rabbits.
So glad we can provide her with a full circle connection to our food source as she grows. •
Too many people are unaware of the process their food goes through before getting to them.
Our animals are loved and cared for about as much as our “pets” are- though they provide us with meat, fur (I plan to make a quilt someday), fertilizer for our veggie and flower gardens and blood for the trees 🌳 •
Thank you to the rabbit peoples for being a companion in this life.
I love you, thank you, please forgive me, I’m sorry •

Luna is such a good mama. She didn’t have a favorite and equally cared for all 3 babies. Most sheep ranchers will separate triplets and pull one off the Mama and keep it separated right away so the other two babies can be healthier. But I just couldn’t do that to Luna. She clearly wanted to care for all three of her lambs so we supplemented Hercules and Tiny with bottles but kept them all together. I am so glad we chose that route - and as you can see in the video (swipe left➡️) so are the babies. They love their mama ❤️
