12. Travelling the world is fun, but it is not everything.
The irony of this statement isn’t lost on me, especially because over 80% of my feed is now officially travel curated.
To be honest, it's kind of reminds me of when a rich person says, "Money isn't everything." Like c'mon dude you're saying this from the comfort of your fancy house with your shiny car & toys...miss us with that 😒
I figure you either have to experience it a bit or not at all to know the truth in that wisdom
Because I'd never left my home country as a child but had relatives abroad, my dream for as long as I could remember was to travel the world & see it all. And boy have I traveled these past years.
I went to India unwilling and with only one goal; to travel like crazy to pass the time. But at some point about halfway through my stay, I was completely exhausted from the brutal travel pace I'd mandated for myself.
The internet has many of us believing that the ultimate "goal" in life is to adventure the world; catching flights hoping from one exotic place to another, ideally with an instaperson (hubby or friend) with mad camera skills to capture us as we look lit for the Gram. God, how sad that seems to me now
I don't regret a single one of my travels, I am extremely blessed and I'm so grateful for it. Alhamdulillah infinitely.
But in hindsight, I find that at the at very most, maybe about 4 of the places I visited made a lasting impact on me. The rest are all now blended together as both wildly exotic but sadly mundane.
In The Forty Rules of Love, the character Shams of Tabriz says, ““No matter what your destination, just be sure to make every journey a journey within.”
And I now know this is key to making any kind of travel worthwhile; the more I travelled inward and grew firm in who I am, the more I was able to take away from my travels.
Travel is therapeutic and I personally believe it to be mandated by the Creator. It can be a powerful tool for enlightenment. But it will only enhance us in as much as we have a sound mind and purity of thought.
So here’s to more intentional journeys and to finding joy in smaller travels
One question that I get asked a lot is “Don’t you get tired of seeing the same places over and over again?” ...........NEVER!!! It’s just your creativity that puts a limit on how you see the places. Don’t think “ ohh I’ve been there done that, its boring! No! Start thinking how can I capture it from a new angle, go play with the light, different hrs of the day or even ad an object to the image 🙏🏻 I’ve been here at Trælanýpan a 1000 of times, lost count to be honest and you never see the same image on my feed. So what I’m saying is “Keep clicking and you’ll start seeing another world”
Like a boss 🐒♨️ Have you ever heard of monkeys who like bathing in onsen (hot springs)? At Jigokudani Monkey Park, Japanese macaques can be observed in their natural habitat.
The day we went there was not so cold but as we were about to leave, this guy just got into the onsen and all cameras were on him! 📸
