One of the questions I get asked most in and out of class is “how do you get them to listen so well?!” My easy answer is; I expect it. The complicated reality is that Big Picture Parenting has done years of research, training, and real life experience to talk to children and parents in a way they feel understood, respected, and capable of follow through. 👂🏻Do you have any magic words that help your children notice when their listening skills need a tune up? 🤓 For some tips on helping your children become better listeners visit:
I just can’t get enough of how much these kiddos loved the animal masks during class today! A great find by their super awesome nanny! I love singing, playing, and dancing with you on our last class together. The four of you make my heart soar every Monday evening! I’ve loved watching you grow and develop, and I look forward to seeing what preschool has in store for you! #love#coachamy

Today we tried the sand blocks, they sound like trains in motion « tchf tchf tchf tchf » 🚊 🚂 🚂 Aujourd’hui nous avons essayé un nouvel instrument: les « sand blocks ». En les frottant, on obtient le même son que celui du train « tchf tchf tchf tchf » 🚊 🚂 🚂
A little friendly competition between sisters this week. They each got 3 balls to throw. If they made it into the first bucket, they got to move on to throwing the ball into the next bucket. After their 3 balls, they switched places and kept taking turns until someone made it into the very last bucket. What could have turned into a mess of competition turned into lots of giggles and cheers as they kept trying to throw a ball perfectly into the final bucket. So much fun with you girls today! #love#coachamy
Sometimes one of my families will have giant confetti filled balloons leftover from a party. I’m an opportunist, and hate to see good things go to waste. So we will adopt the balloons, and bring joy to class by integrating them into our lesson. And sometimes this means that I end up with a popped balloon, and a car full of confetti 🎉 Do you have any fun ways to upcycle or recycle your party decorations?
Playing catch helps children develop their hand eye coordination, motor planning, and is a wonderful social skill builder. This week we are building those skills and many others while we catch and throw to each other, and at targets. Do your children have a favorite ball? Do you play any fun catching and throwing games at home?

My main man and I had the absolute BEST time practicing our skills with throwable paint balls! Our hands ended up bright pink, and we got caught in the pouring rain, but we were prepared with our rain boots. All the laughs while learning and developing were completely worth it! Thanks for being a trooper today! #love#coachamy
This week our students have perfected a piece to share with the world. This is HUGE! We work hard for several months, doing things daily even when we don’t feel like it. Now is the payoff. That moment when you can show off your hard work, shine, and enjoy the spotlight!
Took the plunge and set up a maths center for my 4-10 yr olds. It's just a few things that were floating around the house that are maths inspired. My minimalist brain tossed most of our early schooling supplies but these are things that are open ended in our house. Their Jump Math books are on the bottom of the pile of books for them to work on after playing around with maths if they choose to.
I dont think I'll fill the table this much next time but to get things rolling I wanted to put out a wide variety.

I didn't really win at parenting today. I had a late thing at work and rushed off to the bus. From there the eye doctor, a quick bite to eat, and off to hockey.
Except he fell asleep on the way there and woke up to his foot asleep....or at least I think. He wanted to be carried but I had all the stuff for skating, cue meltdown.😥 i tried to ignore it, got caught up in anger and said we were leaving and I wasn't going to do this anymore. Then I thought about the time it takes me to go there and the cost of the sport we are no where near involved with yet. So there's me, re parking the car trying to be rational and have a conversation. Trying to tell myself he is 5. He has been up since 6 am. He has had a long day.
At the end of the lesson he was happy and it was fine. Its hard to remember he's little. Every practice isn't going to go well. Every trip might not be worth it....but at the end, at the end of the lesson the kid says "when I'm big I am going to boom people into the wall like those big guys." 💕Its worth the frustration, the traffic, the stress. And well, then I'm the asshole.
