Desert Oasis 🌵🏝
This beautiful, lush environment exists right in the middle of a desert! It’s not a mirage - a natural spring provides constant moisture. The water allows tree species such as big tooth maple (right) and grey oak (lower left) to exist in a climate that would normally be much too arid. These species have adapted to the dry air and harsh sun by growing smaller leaves. Life always finds a way…amazing!!
The Cherokee considered the Great Smoky Mountains a sacred place and called it “Shaconage” (Sha-Kon-O-Hey), which means “Land of the Blue Smoke”. The bluish haze in the Smokies are from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by the plants of the area. That piney smell that comes from natural Christmas trees? That’s the set of VOCs pine trees release that we smell. The dense plant life of the Smokies gives off quite a bit of VOCs- the tree species common the mountains give off large amounts of VOCs. The area also gets plenty of rainfall (the growing season here is twice as long as that of the Rockies) and the sunlight is scattered by the VOCs released in the blue part of the visible light spectrum. The area isn’t marked by strong winds, either, so this allows the blue haze to build up.
Of the 59 American national parks, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park boasts the greatest biodiversity with over 19,000 plant and animal species thus far cataloged in these mountains. In 1998 the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory began to catalog all the lived in the park and 10,000 species alone were found that were previously not thought to live in the park. In addition, approximately 1000 of those species were completely new to science!
The tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, and the sixth-tallest in the world. The supertall structure has the same name as the North Tower of the original World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
