The State of Odisha is known for its temples and its unique architecture. Among the Odissi temples, the one that stands out because of its architectural design and sculptural brilliance is the Sun Temple of Konark - a masterpiece of creative genius in both conception and realisation.
One of the 24 wheels of the chariot in Konark Sun Temple.
The sun dial works. Tested. 😀
The major spokes represent the 8 prahars. Each prahar represent 3 hours. The 30 beads between the wider spoke and the thinner spoke indicates minutes, so, 180 minutes. It is read anticlockwise.
Legends speak of a load stone on top of the sun temple which held the stones and iron pillars in place. Its magnetic properties disturbed the ships' compasses and the Portuguese took away the load stone to save their ships and to continue their journey. The temple eventually lost its balance and fell apart.
Unarguably the finest stretch of road in the state, the last few km to Konark (while travelling from Puri), with the magnificent Bay of Bengal on one side and the Balukhand-Konark Wildlife sanctuary on the other, seems nothing short of a dream drive.
A one and half drive from Bhubaneswar, Konark has a few stay options including the govt. run Panthanivas but better properties are available only at Puri or Bhubaneswar.
Why do you always travel to Orissa?
Well, I wish I had a specific answer to it but happily I don't have. 🙄
A little explanation to the most basic question of my life, let's begin.
As we know this is the state least travelled by people whether they are on vacay or people who have gypsy soul but maybe I'll say the most peaceful gypsy i met are in Odisha itself?
That's what make me come here again and again and I'll keep doing it all over again. Like you see world have different perspective about the state but when you actually land here everything is opposite? What can get more beautiful?
Beleive me when i say once you step odisha, youll keep coming back just like me. There is no resistance i swear. 🙏
I met Yogi in Puri, he used to visit Odisha every year and finally around 2008 he decided to reside here permanently. What bought him here? Just the way Odisha is.
I met few travellers from Europe, one German know Hindi very well among them, he told me something like this; idk why I keep coming here every year, it's impossible to stay away. The energy of this place keeps me inviting all the time. And then he added, "Lekin ye bhot ajeeb hai ki indians hi iss jagah ki baare mei bhot kam jaante hai" and I was amazed how he knew so much about the untouched state that Indians even know very less about.
Then he asked me why do you keep coming here Garima? What brings you here?
And my reply was also as same as everyone around me "There is some energy that I don't find anywhere else, it attracts me, there is no resistance"
What I want to say is no matter how old I get, I can never really describe you exactly why I'm here in this state every year like a lost child. Just maybe because I found myself here everytime i come? 🤗🙏
"Wheel On The Bill"
Ps - Again sun temple but this time I have an extra wheel of it and that wheel is really beautiful. The new ten rupees note is undoubtedly one of the best looking notes we currently have in use. Since I got this note I had this frame in my mind and luckily I went odisha and clicked this one.
