#Kingwinch на вершине Килиманджаро ⛰
So it was done) some weeks ago) #Kilimanjaro#Uhuru peak. 5895m. Nothing to add. Thanks @vova_vnd

Facebook reminded me that 8 years ago today I left for Tanzania 🇹🇿 to climb Mt Kilimanjaro 🏔. It was an epic adventure I’ll remember forever.
Short story: it’s the coldest I’d ever been. 4 hours into the summit climb my hands were frozen and thought I was approaching frostbite (not even close but coming from Brisbane what would I know?) even though I was wearing 2 pairs of thermal gloves. I mentioned this to my guide and he said ‘it’s normal, keep going’. I did and eventually summited after 7 hours.
In the picture you can’t see my guides left hand. At the summit I saw that it was covered by only a thin sock. When I asked why he said that he had lost the other glove that was gifted to him. .

There are six Kilimanjaro routes so how can you choose one🤷♂
Yes, it can be a bit of an exercise when selecting a route. There are five main routes on Mount Kilimanjaro – Marangu, Machame, Lemsoho/Shira, Rongai and Umbwe.
Very popular. Gentle gradients and long sections up to 4700m. Beautiful forests and moorlands, comfortable but basic huts. The 6 day variant provides good time for acclimatisation. 5-6 days, 64 km.
Second most popular route. Beautiful forest, very good for acclimatisation, scenic traverse to Barafu. 6-7 days, 49km.
Lemosho & Shira:
Long access drive, remote, less frequented, beautiful forests, scenic traverse to Barafu, camping. Excellent for acclimatisation. 7-8 days, 56 km.
Long access drive, remote, less frequented, some fine, wild, high-altitude mountain scenery, camping. Good for acclimatisation. 6-7 days, 65km.
Shortest and steepest route, tough. Beautiful forest, spectacular ridge, bad for acclimatisation, scenic traverse to Barafu, camping. Dangerous route. 5-6 days, 45 km.

Hårdt, men fedt!
"I will conquer this mountain one step at a time"- that's what I thought when I decided to climb Kilimanjaro ⛰. And I did. This was definitely the hardest thing I did in my life, but I am so proud I did it!
The problem with the steps is that there were over 130 000 steps and some of them, especially at the end, were really hard. There were a lot of mental challanges on the way, not only the physical ones.
Picture this - on the day of the summit (day 6 of the trip) you wake up at about midnight to climb from 4 700 m to 5 900 m. You get out of your tent, it is damn cold and dark, you start climbing using your torch, you are wearing about 5 layers up and 4 down.
You start climbing, each unnessesary or extra fast move makes you loose your breath right away. You need to breathe very deep to try to substitute for the lack of oxygen in your lungs. Along the way you see some people turning back because they have altitude sickness - some throw up, some even faint. It is not safe, so they have to come back.
You hide from a strong snow blizzard in your balaclava and just keep going for 7 hours like this, step by step, veeery slow, "pole - pole" as they say in Tanzania.
You can't really do many rest stops because you will freeze, your fingers are not listening to you anymore because there are numb from the cold.
It was an enormous effort, but you didn't give up, you did it! It is still dark when you reach the summit and you are so full of emotions you can't help but cry. Your tears freeze immediately on your cheeks, but you don't care anymore, you did it! 💪 The light slowly comes out and warms you up, and you are the happiest person in the world! 🤗 ☀ This experience will change you forever, you will never ever forget it.
There are so many more things I want to tell you about the mountain and I will do so in the following posts - about the prices, about the guides and the porters, I will also upload the Stories to show you how the camps looked like.
Meanwhile tell me - would you want to do something like this?
And I am off to take a shower 🚿 😂

Remember it can be seen from anywhere, but you can climb it only when you are in Tanzania. Come one, come all. uhuru peak 🗻 #Tanzania
