The Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School is in the former downtown YWCA building, which was built in 1950 on Franklin Street upon the site where US President Millard Fillmore’s House once stood. Built in a modernist, international style, the building is a fine example of mid-Century architecture, with clean lines and restrained details, and does pleasantly compliment older buildings around it in size and character. The building originally housed a swimming pool, gymnasium, weight room, multi-purpose ballroom, plus a commercial kitchen, offices, and classrooms. In 2006, due to the change in the organization’s mission from physical fitness to working towards the empowerment of women, the building no longer suited their needs, and they sold it to an education company, who renovated the building, reopening it as a Science-focused charter school. The building has seen its long banks of windows replaced with new ones, but otherwise appears much in original condition, and is a fine example of mid-20th Century Architecture. Buffalo, NY, US
